Supposing we made the top 4, - How would kenny do in europe?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Kharhaz » Mon Oct 10, 2011 1:35 am

Bear in mind, when Kenny was in charge during our dominant years, we were banned from Europe. Last season when he took over from Hodgson, the games in the UEFA cup were his first games in charge of european games (for Liverpool).

So, as the title asks, how would he do?

For all the faults Rafa had, when it came to european football, he knew his stuff. When we played in any european match, you could guarantee a performance, regardless of whether or not we lost our last match in the league.

But Kenny, and european football dont go hand in hand together. This is no slight on our king of course, its just a simple observation. I have doubts, even if we did make the top four, Kenny would do as well.

I hope we do make the top 4, we are very capable of doing so. I also hope we do well in europe next season should we achieve this. I just cannot help this lingering doubt should we do so.

With the current squad I would say not too good. If Spurs can rip us apart dare I say what Barcelona or Real Madrid would do if we ran into them.

On the positive though former Liverpool teams have always been able to progress in Europe despite sometimes playing poorley in the league so who knows maybe we could get far, all depends on the group & tactics employed by the manager.

  Really?  Ya think?

I think we'll be fine if we get there.  Steve Clarke will have a big hand in how we play in Europe I feel.  Keep in mind when we get back into the CL we will have a much different caliber of players that will sign for us, and therefore be at the disposal of Kenny and the coaching staff.

I won't celebrate Rafa going........ but I will be over the moon if Dalglish comes in. League within 2 years if he gets the job, AND YOU CAN QUOTE ME ON THAT.

Let's just get there first, its going to be hard this year to finish 4th. Spurs are looking good and Arsenal will be back.

No offence but the Spurs argument is lame.

Our squad is not "weak" per se. It is work in progress. Individually we have weak spots and the poor performance we have seen this year have been a matter of form.

We have a lot of new players this season. Possibly more in the coming two transfer windows. Gerrard to come back (who, as a point of contrast, clearly is still better than any Spurs player).

Of course there are still teams who are miles above us in Europe. But when you look at Man Utd making the CL final and the fact we can beat them on a good day, European football don't not worry me in the slightest.

We have shown even with this squad that on the big games we can pull out a result. Doing in in Europe and maintaining home form is another thing though. We have an ok side now but I think we are still lacking in 2 or 3 quality players, some continental flair if you will.

Surely if Kenny is good enough to get us into Europe, then he will be good enough to play there.

Kenny played in enough European games as a player under probably the best manager our club has ever had to know hoe to set a team up to play.

As SouthCoast Shankly says "European football don't not worry me in the slightest."
Our job is simple, to support the club, not just parts of the club that are easy to support, but every one who plays a part, that includes ALL players.  We are stronger when we are all walking in the same direction. Walk On

When did spurs rip us apart?
They didnt score their second goal until we were down to 9 men. They only scored two more after that.
We played badly. They won. No ripping apart from spurs at all.

Liverpool's mentality is known to preform well on big games, thus preforming well in the Champions League, where the big clubs from Europe play against each other. I think we'll do fine, we just have to get there first.

I'm with damjan, if we get into Europe we're still Liverpool and we have Anfield.  Some clubs excel against the best of the best more than others and some don't.  We do.  Not to say we'd go and win the damn thing but I tend to feel confident about europe.

In the olden days we used to play the exact clever passing game in Europe as we played in the League. I seem to remember it was quite successful...

Kenny is reinstalling that style of play. The Liverpool way.

It works, at home and abroad.
