Striker linked - Riki

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

What we really need isn't Nihat in my view. Surprise surprise but I'd have a look closer to home. I think we need somebody who is a 100% merchant. Someone who'll put their foot in, someone who wouldn't lie down and die like we did the other night. I'd quite like somebody youngish, who we know for certain will do it in English football. The type of player I'm talking about though is almost never available to be honest. Infact you'd never find one. Unless that is he is behind in the pecking order at his club. Behind one of the best young players this country has ever produced and one of the most prolific scorers in this particular clubs history.
We don't need Nihat. Let's give Manure a ring and ask about Alan Smith. My type of striker is Smithie, hard as feck, a good player and never stops running.

It's worth a crack going for defoe mate, it really is but i can't see us getting him tbh. If we were to get a tottenham forward, I think Robbie Keane would be more realistic.

No harm in testing spurs hand over defoe though is there!?.................

I,m glad people agree that this buying spaniards is becoming a joke,Big Mick funny you mentioned Alan Smith i wanted him when he was at Leeds, although he is playing midfield at manure, the lad could have done us a great job at centre forward.

The problem with smith is that he doesn't score enough goals when played as a striker so the best he can be really is a support striker and not our out and out goalscorer.

An interesting suggestion about Smith Mick, but to be honest I wouldn't touch him.  He's a dishonest player, he dishes it out but can't take it, typical of so many of the players to come out of O'Leary's Leeds team of a few years ago.

On top of that I think all this playing him in midfield by United will have taken the edge off his attacking game.  It's happened to others before like Sutton at Celtic.  They started playing him in midfield and at the back to cover for players who were injured and now he looks completely out of place up front.  Smith's maybe different though as he's young enough to convert back to striker, I don't know.

And my last point is that United are so stretched for squad size this season with all their injuries that there's no way they are going to let anyone go, least of all a central midfielder while Keane is out, and least of all to a premiership rival.

Great to see you back Phil! I'm with you Mick, I really would like to see us invest more money on some British signings. I look at what Arnesson and Jol did at spurs over the last year, bringing in lots of quality young British talent in to set up what currently looks to be a bright future, and think why the hell couldn't we have done that!!!

I know it's an easy excuse to blame too many foreigners for poor performances but in our case it seems to be founded. It's no coincidence that both Carra and Stevie appear to have more pride in the shirt than all of our foreign players put together

The main floor in my argument though is how many quality British strikers could we a) afford or b) lure to Anfield.

Don't think I would argue with that Neil.

This is what worries me Phil when we are constantly linked with the likes of Simao and Joaquim, won't they be just too lightweight for the prem?

I'm sure we don't have endless funds to spend in January and I am anxious we don't waste them all on players who are just not up to the physical demands of English football.

Heh, that's question is easy to answer, since the Spaniards that have been playing in the premiere legue before Rafa came can be counted with the fingers of my right hand.

Smith? never thought he was class, but if you think that's what the team needs ok, I just want Liverpool winning as much as possible, the Champions League, the FA Cup, the EPL everything. I guess that when the things go wrong there's always a scape goat. Certainly Josemi, Luis Garcia haven't given the team good things, but I don't quite see Crouch, Neil Mellor, or Warnock winning the EPL for Liverpool, even with Smith.

Bottomline, some of the spaniards are a problem, but another problem is that we have a couple of good centre backs (Carraguer excellent, Hyppya decent) that have an enormous work load as there is not decent substitute for them. We have a left wing with Riise and Kewell (when fit) that are not classy, and we have 3 forwards (one of them Spaniard) that aren't quite doing what they should.

So let's take scape goats in the old Spaniards, it seems appropiate in the second century of Trafalgar, but those are not only the problems we have, IMHO.

(BTW, I'll be as a supporter of Liverpool with or without the spaniards, I just want to see Liverpool winning, no matter what).

totally agree with most of what you have said, but it makes you think why have no other premiership managers have taken a chance on spanish players considering for the last 5 years la liga has been recognised along side the premiership as the best leagues in the world.Alonso aside and i hope he recaptures last season form the rest are not fit enough to wear the red shirt.Reina i will reserve judgement on as i,m not convinced yet either way.It has to say something why only Rafa has bought spanish talent to our shores.French players have adapted well, and the odd Italian (zola, vialli etc)so why is it British clubs tend not to buy spanish.
