That'll leave room for 3 in the middle and stevie can slot in behind the 2 strikers.

                         Reina

         Carrager   Hyypia   Palleta/Agger
Alves                                                Aurelio

                Momo   StevieG   Xabi

            Crouch/Robbie    Bellamy

That looks good enough for me

This looks good to me too. I think you'll definitely get the best out of Stevie by playing with two more defensive central midfielders behind him.

Then again, is Rafa really goiing to dispense with the 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 which served us so well last season? From October / November onwards we had a Championship winning form so 4-4-2 would logically remain the preferred formation.

I've always been a big advocate of 3-5-2 but is it really suited to Premiership football?

If we are going to continue playing 4-4-2 then I would pick the following -

                    Reina

Alves     Carrager   Hyypia   Aurelio

    StevieG  Momo  Xabi   Kewell

                  Bellamy

                  Crouch

I am also wondering where Gonzalez AND Kewell would fit in...?

I guess that any eleven you put up (within reasoN! will get a look in next year as we are going to win the league and have strong runs in every other competition...this is our time....  :buttrock

I think he'll be used in both positions during the season.

Rafa buys players that give more options, and more permeations when it comes to formation.

Assuming alves comes we will have a squad that can play 4-4-2, 4-5-1, 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 and still have 2 players for every position.

Agree with you Sabre.

1: I have a feeling that the squad will be rotated quite a bit next season.

2: Remeber Stevie Gs played approx 75 games this season including the WCup, Rafa may want to rest him from time to time (avoid injuries  that sort of thing).

Interesting formation that worked for us very well in a match last season. If (hopefully not) Kewell leaves, this formation could be used with gonzales coming off the bench for one of the centre backs

That looks a very strong exciting formation (Gonzales has played wingback so could also be used) The only problems would be a lack of cover in midfield (if Hamann does go) a lack of cover for the right side(if Alves were injured suspended etc.) and a lack of a second targetman. Things are starting to look really good for next season now. A couple of quality signings and I think we have a real chance of EPL title. I would really like Rafa to use that formation in a lot of games next season.

We have enough cover to play the 5-3-2 in every position except for the central midfield.  If one of Xabi, Gerrard or Momo get injured/suspended then obviously revert to a 4-4-2.  But Rafa will not want to have any of them sit on the bench so he will try to play all of them as much as possible.  And personally i think that we have a team better suited to 5-3-2 than a 4-5-1.

Reina

          Finnan Hyypia Carra Aurilio

                 Momo    Alonso
                      Gerrard
Alves/Garcia                      Gonzales/Kewell
                     A Striker

Obviously we have many players that can play in various positions.

Reasons for 5-3-2
-We have 4 good CBs (2 of which are young and need time and experience)
-We have a bounty of WBs (Riise/Gonzalez/Aurelio/Finnan/Kronkamp)
-Alves probably wont come and Garcia is not a winger leaving right wing empty
-Who of our strikers is suited to a lone role? I would personally like to see Crouch and Bellamy team up.

I just loved the way that Australia used this formation, it makes for great ball movement coming out of defence and good attacking football.

i believe stevie g will play as an attacking midfielder most of the season,
but will obviously be used as a right sided midfielder, defensive midfield, 2nd striker-HECK! even right back if needed at some point.

His best position. Right side of midfield.
