We need to score goals, preferably three but I'm thinking at least two, so 4-4-2 has to be the only option. Really for me the only area in any doubt is midfield although I would love to see Fowler start simply because he's nowhere near as effective off the bench and we have to have more than one CF on the bench. I'm guessing there's more chance than usual Fowler will make the bench as we need to win by 2 goals but I wouldn't be surprised if Rafa fooks up as usual and shows our midfield is a mess by including virtually every midfield option on the bench.

Reina
Finnan
Carragher
Agger
Riise
Gerrard
Xabi Alonso
Mascherano
Gonzalez
Kuyt
Fowler (will probably be Crouch though)

Subs : Dudek, Hyypia, Sissoko, Pennant, El Zhar, Crouch, Bellamy

WTF did we have two CBs on the bench and only one CF for the away leg? There are seven subs unless I've missed something, to only use up one for a striker is poor tactics. What if we'd gone 3-0 down, would we have just shrugged shoulders and said "well there's always next year".

Knock' Knock' Knock'

This kind of big match is for Gerrard.

4-4-2

GK - Gerrard

LB - Gerrard
CB - Gerrard
CB - Gerrard
RB - Gerrard

LM - Gerrard
CM - Gerrard
CM - Gerrard
RM - Gerrard

FW - Gerrard
FW - Gerrard

.
..
...
....
.....
...... How many yellow cards you think Gerrard can serve ?  :O

This time for real.

4-4-2

---------------------Reina---------------------

----Finnan----Carragher----Agger----Arbeloa----

------Pennant-------8------14------Riise-------

------------Kuyt---------------Crouch----------

2-0 will be a beauty. It will be a great fight if we can win it more than 2 goals margin.

If Gerrard can score first, then the victory will be more likely.

For Tuesdays match, my lineup would be:

                   Reina

Finnan   Agger   Carragher  Arbeloa

            Masch      Alonso

Pennant      Gerrard           Riise

                   Crouch

This is a complete rethink on what I would've originally proposed, and is based on the injury to Carvalho. In his place almost certainly will be Essien, who is good in the tackle, but not so great in the air. Add to that the fact that he is not a natural defender, and I think we have found the chink in Chelsea's armour. When playing against Crouch and a high ball comes in, you need to be keeping more than half an eye on who he might be nodding the ball down to, as most of the time he won't be heading for goal. This is very hard to do, and all but the top defenders fail to deal with it, doing what comes instinctively and challenging Crouch for the ball in the air. I feel Essien will fall into this trap, and seing as he's not good in the air anyway, Crouch will win the majority of balls. Gerrard has built a brilliant understanding with Crouch, he always seems to know exactly where the big man's gonna nod the ball down. For me, this formation will get us the goals required without leaving ourselves open at the back, for if we concede we have a mountain to climb.

Some of the more attentive of you may have noticed that I've put Agger & Carragher on opposite sides from normal. This isn't a mistake, for this one match I think this minor change is necessary. Agger was pulled all over the place by Drogba on Wednesday, especially for the goal, and I feel the aggression of Carragher would be more suited to his physical game. Shevchenko on the other hand is more of a technical player, and should provide an easier challenge for the young Dane. Calls for Hyypia to come in though, are in my opinion unfounded and unwise. One thing Chelsea don't lack upfront is pace, something which we all know Sami hasn't got in abundance. Arbeloa didn't have the best game against Pompey, but has impressed when played on the left since joining, and in front of him has Riise, who is more than capable of tracking back and helping out.

With this formation I feel we can get the two goals required, without conceding, and progress to the final. I don't normally predict scorers, but for this one I'm gonna put my neck on the line and say that if we lineup like this, Gerrard will get them both.

The problem with playing Crouch up front on his own is that Terry will mark him, play Kuyt as well and THEN they will have a problem in the air.

That wouldn't neccesarily be a bad thing. As you said, Terry would be the one to mark Crouch due to Essien's lack of Aerial ability, but Essien is the one who's more likely to leave space for the second man, Gerrard.

If we did go for Crouch & Kuyt up front though, I think Rafa would put Gerrard back on the right. He likes to have two very defensively minded CM's, and Gerrard leaves too much space behind him when he goes marauding forward.

Why don't you play Gerrard in the holding role?

I feel like 1-0 is our best chance and then winning it in extra time, using Anfield to our advantage.  Keeping the clean sheet is top priority because if we conceed one then we need 3 which is a pretty mighty task.  I say play defensivlely and for the counter-attack because they know that an away goal will nearly seal it for them and possibly we can use that to our advantage.
Assuming that Finnan CANT go which is worst case senario
                    Reina
Arbeloa    Carra      Agger     Riise
     Gerrard  Mascherano  Alonso
Pennant                                Bellamy
                     Crouch
yea I don't like it much either :(
if we do give up a goal I would try and switch to
                      Reina
        Carra       Hyypia   Agger
Gerrard    Mascherano   Alonso  Gonzalez
                       Kuyt
               Bellamy      Crouch
Really don't want Arbeloa to play so I hope Finnan is fit.  Also don't want gonzalez or zenden to play and normally the only way to do that is play arbeloa at LB and riise at LM.

These formations seems absolutely nuts but we I think we have to try something different to throw Jose off, because we just didn;t look threatening at ALL last week and I hope we come out stronger and more confident on Tuesday with the support of Anfield.

Reina

Finnan (RB)
Carragher
Hyppia
Arbeloa (LB)

Pennant (RM)
Gerrard
Alonso
Riise (LM)

Crouch
Kuyt

Recall Hyppia to nullify Drogba's aerial threat (Agger was pathetic even though I'm a fan of him really)....and we need wing plays by pennant and riise to cause problems at chelsea's  full backs (that's where they are weak IMO)...cut back to gerrard/kuyt or cross to crouch...and kuyt should work his pants off to poach whatever he can....

classic 4-4-2...no daimond shapes pls...we need width in attack more than anything...especially if you use crouch...

all in all everyone should work their pants off...

Nice post maguskwt.

I would like to see Kuyt & Fowler upfront. I know with the possible exception of Stu the Red, i will be in the minority here.

But i thought Fowler had a good game on the weekend, and we need his vision. But i know there are still question marks wether Fowler & Kuty play together. But if they can get their one-twos going it would be awesome.

If it goes pear shaped, then bring Coruch of the bench. (i know, i know, Crouch hasn't scored coming off the bench, but surely thats just an anamoly).
