Smicer staying? - Lens cannot afford him

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Looks like Smicer is staying unless anyone else comes in for him.

No Lens return for Smicer
Liverpool, Wednesday June 09 2004
Vladimir Smicer's agent has dismissed rumours that his player is set for a return to Lens.

The Liverpool midfielder, who spent three seasons at the Stade Felix-Bollaert before his transfer to Merseyside in 1999, has been linked with a move to the French Ligue 1 club.

"I think that the idea of Smicer moving to Lens is a rumour only," said agent Pavel Paska.

Paska stressed that Lens would not be able to meet the Czech Republic star's wage demands.

Lens are not a football club that are able to sign a player like Vladimir Smicer these days; I mean, they do not have enough money to pay him," added Paska.

"Smicer has a contract at Liverpool and I think that he will honour it."

The 31-year-old, who is currently preparing for the Czech Republic's Euro 2004 clash with Latvia in Group D on June 15, has one year left to run on his Anfield contract.

On the money he is on at Liverpool, Smicer is not going to leave freely unless they match his salary. He needs a push, hopefully Benitez will provide that

i think the reported interest from southampton died down due to his wage demands. considering he is also the wrong side of thirty i can't see him being a major player at lfc anymore.

But good backup.

Lets face it, i'd rather have him there if Kewell was to go missing for 2 months down to injury than not have him there.

He's a good player and an option. Which is what we need.

I know that Vlad never brings his international form into the prem much but if he has a good euro i think it would be worth keeping him as a squad player!

I would rather see him go. He can be so frustrating and you only have to wink at him and he goes down like a sack of spuds

I think he's a good squad player for us to keep.

He's never been given a chance at anfield by the fans. He's constantly gettin moaned and groaned at when he plays and that can't be easy.

Players need to be full of confidence when they play and i think he's always played thinking that the crowd is against him

Hence the reason all of his best performances come away from home.

Exactly it can't be easy going onto the pitch knowing that not only do you have to worry about the oposition but also the crowd.

I admit sometimes he's painfull but he has scored some vital goals for us.

why do people think the LFC crowd are against him, its because 80% of the time he makes no difference to the game.

Why keep him as a squad player, either he is good enough or he isn't

Another GH waste of money, we'll pay him £2m this year to add nothing and then leave on a free at the end of the season.

Cus they are. This is a fact, the Anfield crowd have two or three players who they like to berate, moan at and genrally not support.

Murphy constantly despite only sub appearences
Heskey all day every day
Smicer when he shirks a two footed lunge
Berger when he was here
Kewell (to some extent towards the end of the season)

If a player comes on and does not score or create a goal within a few minutes, or at the sight of one misplaced pass, the crowd are on their back. FACT
JUSTICE FOR THE 96
