SHEFFIELD UNITED VS LIVERPOOL - the premiership assault begins

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Rafa has to take some of the blame... You can't play your reserves and expect to win in the premiership .....

It was evident that we missed crouch (why hit long balls when we have 2 short strikers on display), garcia, finnan & alonso. And why does rafa leave it so late to bring on pennant (i would have preferred crouch though) for the ineffective fowler....

But to be fair, the injuries to riise and carra threw rafa's game plan out the window. Heard that both of them had twisted ankles...how long will they be out ?

But it is 2 points dropped ....make no mistake about it. Sheffield United are a pi$$ poor side...They ain't gonna do a wigan or west ham this season, cos they are going down...which makes this draw a little hard to swallow.

Not a good start.

Rafa should of started with a much stronger squad than what he did and we should of killed the game off in the first half, but all credit to Sheff Utd, they held on till the end and got a point.

Rafa has to take most of the blame, his selection was very niave on his part, you watch Arsenal, United and Chelsea will walk away with the full 3 points and we'll already be at an disadvantage.  :no

Well its a pretty :censored: start and we can play MUCH better. Alonso and Finnan shouldve played and Crouch shouldve come on. But theres a long way to go yet. I just hope Everton don't win today they'll be singing Rafabeneathus again.

We should have lost today if it wasnt for a ref's mistake ! Gerrard put in a good effort... workd hard but was dissapointing to watch at times ! he played some cra.ppy long passes and some wrong decisions while on the ball ! Aurelio is no left winger ! Gerrard is no right winger ! kromkamp is a shi.tty right back and Fowler is a sub.... cant start a game ! I thought we'd start a slightly unexpected side but rafa's selections were just over the top wrong ! i hope we go through the qualifying stages and Rafa decides to field a more suitable team for Maccabi's game... could turn ugly if he brings in Kromkamp and fowler and zenden from the start !

I think the man problem was that Zenden is not good enough a player to boss the midfield in the way that Gerrard or Alonso can. Sissoko was on the field to eat up attacks and allow the other central midfielder to dictate the game, and Zenden does not seem to be capable of that.

Apart from that, I'm not too worried. Any newly-promoted team will be a surprise package, as the way the play is different from the way they play in the Championship, preventing opposition managers from doing any effective homework. And Rafa was no doubt counting on three strategic substitutions to come on and crush the Blades, but he was rendered helpless by the injuries to JAR and Carra. Nevertheless, our starting 11 had enough quality to win here and they didn't.

To be honest, today I think we were bent over and rogered by that random element that keeps football interesting.

You have a valid point, but the players should be able to play today and on tuesday night against Maccabi Hafia. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't kill them to play two games in a three day period. Secondly if Liverpool want to win the title we have to be able to beat the Fulham's, West Ham's, Bolton's and Sheff Utd's of the league, we can't afford to be throwing two points away at mediocre opposition. There is little margain for error with Chelsea raising the level to another notch. It's a bitterly disappointing result and one that could be costly come the end of the season.
