Plus we have to go to Kiev on monday, Rafa will probably rest some players on saturday with one eye on our CL qualifier next week.
I hate SU and they could prove to be a very tricky opener anyone thinking it will be a walk in the park is deluded, Warnock will have that lot fired up and they will try and boot us off the park.

We better not field a weakened team, that would just be asking for trouble, we have to win this

Heres mine.

                                Reina
        Finnan   Caragher   Hyypia    Riise

        Gerrard   Alonso    Sissoko   Aurelio

                     Bellamy  Crouch

Subs: Pennant, Agger, Zenden, Garcia, Carsson.

My only note able change is Aurelio on the left, I think him and Riise will be quite a good combination down the left. In the community shield they were able to swap positions and covered for each other well, both can defend and go forward and both have a good left foot. I havent dropped Gonzo for any specific reason, I'd just like to see how Aurelio and Riise combine. The fact of the matter is, our squad looks so strong that players will miss out on games every now and then. This week for me it would be Gonzo.

As said before in another thread I've started with our three key midfielders, its vital we start off well and I dont think its time just yet to get complacent and think we can turn up to ' lesser teams ' grounds i.e Sheffield United and drop players like Gerrard and Alonso here and there so early on in the season. They'll be time for that later on in the campaign to rotate.

I think he will be made up, although as someone said its another thread.

This is not an easy start to the season imo, Warnock will have his side pumped up for this. Rafa should start as close to a full strength team as possible and then hopefully bring off key players with about 20 minutes left. It is vital that we win this opening fixture.

                       Reina

Finnan    Carragher  Hyypia   Riise

Pennant  Alonso    Sissoko     Gerrard

              Crouch   Bellamy

This is why I picked our strongest line-up, we're going to need more physical bodies in midfield especially and maybe the likes of Pennant, Gonzo and Zenden could start the game on Monday when playing Haifia.

Plus that Neil Warnock will have those boys fired up as you said, but on top of that he's a right loud mouth c--t . And I dont think I could bare watching is post match comments if they win. I'd rather watch the " Oh, the big teams always get the decisions, its not fair blah blah blah " spew, tosse.r.

I'd be inclined to play a slightly second string team against Sheffield United in the hope they can still win, while preserving the big guns for the European game in midweek. I'd rest Gerrard, Alonso and Bellamy, starting the game with the two new blokes, (it may be too physical a baptism for Gonzales) and Garcia uptop alonside crouch. Something like this:

                                                       Reina

                             Finnan      Carragher      Hyypia         Riise

                                Pennant    Zenden     Sissoko     Aurelio

                                            Crouch      Garcia

I'd have the big guns on the bench with the intention of giving them half an hour or so to really just top up the fitness levels. Hyypia would start over Agger only by a whisker as I feel certain they will bombard us from set-pieces.

I think Sissoko will start along side Gerrard who will be swapped with Alonso at around 60 mins.  I think also Garcia will be brought on for either Bellamy or Crouch if things aren't happening. It should really be 3 points but you never know with these teams that have just been promoted so our strongest team is need for part of the match at least.

                 Reina

Finnan  Carragher  Hyypia  Riise

Pennant  Gerrard  Sissoko  Gonzalez

          Crouch  Bellamy

SUBS: Dudek, Alonso, Zenden, Garcia, Agger .

I see what your sayin Mick but this game is almost as important as the midweek one imo. If we dropped points straight away it would take the pressure off Chelsea.
The team you picked would probably still be strong enough to take all 3 points and rest key players, i just wouldnt risk it yet personally.

true true !
I dont see us having trouble attacking Sheff. with the formation you put out but defensively, we might struggle with Sissoko looking the only one in midfield who can apply decent pressure on the holders of the ball...
should get us the 3 points but wouldnt risk it here too !

think the game will be a good chance for alonso to get a bit more fitness and run into a little bit of form, at good game could get his confidence up. Hyypia coming back in if his fit just to make sure the backs safe.

                                       Reina

                       Finnan   Carra   Hyypia    Riise

                  Pennant     Sissoko  Alonso    Gonzalez

                                 Bellamy
                                           Crouch

still rekon stevie should have a bit of a rest after the england game against Greece although im sure he would be dying to get out there for the first game of the season. also would like to see the bellamy crouch partnership develop, and maybe if we up a goal or 2, bring on sinama. think at the moment the haifa game is the more important and with our so called "B" team, showing Chelsea how to play football, i wouldnt be suprised if rafa fields a team similar to the one against chelsea.

I think its a bit too risky to play a weakened team for a match like this, sheff utd are not that bad, we need to win this match and if we play a weakened team i feel we could be in for a shock with the result of this match and then we'll all be furious. We could fall behind chelski from the go!

Strong team to get our season up and running for me.
