Serious question - Why not Martin O'Neill?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

the one thing i did like about o neill was that he told villa to get stuffed as they never had any ambitions to seriously push for cl or win anything.they were selling his best players and only giving him a percentage back to replace them so imo it was a big thing to walk away and cite the clubs lack of ambition as the reason.not many would do that.

i wouldnt want him here though as his style is too direct and id rather we sold him downing and henderson rather than give him the job.
the most important thing fsg need to consider is that we dont end up back here in the same situation this time next year and imo with o neill we would.

Just gonna say thanks for your responses. I have to admit to being surprised by some of the reasoning used, but I appreciate you taking the time to answer my question. Thanks.

Totally disagree with the shouts about him being Sh*t. If you pushed me for a sensible choice (apart from the blindingly obvious) I would lean towards him. For me, his most important quality is something we are crying out for. He's one of the best motivators in the business.

With him, Andy Carroll would be like a rhino on viagra.

f*cking Ruthless.

Like I said, I was/am surprised by the responses to be honest. Not from all, but a couple of people I expected a more positive viewpoint. Thanks for the response.

Hey Lando, what's been sh1thouse about him then in your eyes? A lot of people seem to have a negative opinion of him, but there's little substance to the case put forward other than people didn't like him as a player and some opinion that he plays route 1 footie the whole time. I am just a little surprised at this negativity towards him in comparison to up and coming and perhaps less proven managers.

I am not a huge fan of his, but look at the background

Has won the 1st division and the European Cup twice as a player
Capped 64 times for his country
Captained his country
Took Wycombe Wanderers up 3 divisions in 5 years and won the FA trophy twice with them
2 league cups and another final with Leicester plus giving them European football each time. Midtable management 4 seasons in a row with a team that was never the greatest.
With regards loyalty and jumping, he stayed and saw out his contract despite the opportunity to jump to Leeds.
Celtic - 3 league titles, 3 scottish cups and a league cup and took the team into CL football 3 times.
Leaves the club was to look after his wife which is hardly bastardlike material.
Premier League manager of the month 7 times
SPL manager of the month 9 times
SWFA manager of the year 3 times.

Like I said, I am not married to him, but at the same time, I would hardly call that ***** either. Considering most on this board are talking about someone who is tried and tested, I don't follow how he is dismissed out of hand. Considering the state and status of the club currently, I think that he has a lot of merit.

I dont think there is much wrong with the guy. He is known as the messiah. Top manager and very passionate. Currently manager of Sunderland and only just started. So A) i dont think the owners want to pay a huge package B) He wouldnt put himself forward as it has been publically aired were looking to speak to many a manager so if he was to put himself forward and not get it it wont sit well with Sunderland fans and board ETC and C) He is a kind of manager who likes to put his whole spin on the team would take him a while and i dont think time will be on a managers side this year.

look at the comments by agger about our style of footy under hodgson and o neill`s teams are a lot more direct than roys.
the players at the club dont want to play that o neill style of footy, within a few weeks of him taking charge we`ll get the usual articles in the dutch or danish press and before you know it there will be trouble at mill again.
the only thing o neill has got in his favour is that he is experienced and you know what you are going to get, no one knows how AVB or martinez would do at anfield but you have a fair idea what o neill would do.
o neill might not take us backwards in terms of league position but in terms of footy he would.
