Sami hyypia - Testimonial?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby god_bless_john_houlding » Tue Jul 10, 2007 1:06 am

This year will be big Sami's 9th year at Anfield will he be allowed to sign another 1 year extention so he reaches the milestone of 10 years. Not many players remain at one club for 10 years nowadays and certainly not many players from abroad so I think for sentimental reasons more than anything the Liverpool board should offer him a 10th year at the club. Also he is still able to do a job at Anfield for emergancy cover and teaching the younger centre halfs i.e. hobbs/antwi, how to cope in the prem.

2) pass and move is the Liverpool groove
3) FIRST WILL ALWAYS BE FIRST AND SECOND WILL ALWAYS BE NOTHING.
4) If Torres has scored 60 league goals for Liverpool by the start of the 2011/12 season, I'll say he's better than Owen.

If he gets a testimonial or not, he's already established himself as one of the legends of Liverpool FC.

i dont agree with testimonials in this day and age, well to be fair i do agree with them as a sign of thanking a player but any money made should go to charity (like niall quinn did).

players now are millionaires so there is no need for premier league players to get money from this, lower divisions is a different story

I dont think Rafa should keep him on just to notch up the "milestone ten years". I think this season coming will probably be Sami's last in a red shirt.

But that doesnt mean Sami's not entitled to a testimonial does it ? He deserves one, like gbjh said he's served the club well, and its testimony to Sami's loyalty that he's been with us for so long. I think Rafa could do a lot worse in asking Sami to stay on in a coaching role of some sort, that is, if Hyypia feels its time to hang up his boots of course.

i dont have a problem with testimonials mate, just the money sid of it nowdays.

20 years ago and before that i could understand it, the players didnt earn fortunes like they do now, so to accept more money is wrong when something else could benefit from the tetimonial, while the fans also get to thank him. have the testimonila but there is no need for it to be a money spinner for the player

I agree with you Peewee. My comment was just a general opinon of this topic. It wasnt aimed at you or your comment.

I believe the money should or could be better used towards a charity of some sort.

hyppia deserves this and a whole lot more, the money made from the testimonial should be put forward to create a statue of him to put on the goal-line to symbolise his great defending over the years

No room for sentiment in football.

The head is willing but the body is no longer available for the big Finn - shame but hey ho.

Good luck with whatever you do, and thanks for the memories but off if not part of the backroom staff end of this year.

Peewee is right in saying the money should go to charity from any modern day testimonials. I still think a 10th year would be a fitting end to a fantastic career with the reds.

Sami doesn't need the money so if there is to be a testimonial then the money should go to a charity of his choice. Personally I'd let him go as the hard fact is that he must be costing us £2m a season in wages alone. No room for sentiment in today's cut-throat football world

I'd love to see him as a coach after he finishes his playing days at liverpool, he has been a model pro in his time at anfield and has been very solid, it would be great for him to help teach the kids his style and approach to the game, Jack Hobbs could be the next sami hyypia, hehe :D

But should he have a testimonial I would try and get tickets, as I would for Jamie Carraghers testimonial which could be the first match at the new stadium (or i would hope so :p )
