Roy's Liverpool - How's it Evolving? - Set Up, Tactics, In-Depth Footy Chat

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

If I were Roy, I would give chance to the younger players instead of buying 30 year old's like Luke Old, Petrov, poulsen, etc etc. The players who should be given chances are Pacheco, Kelly, jonjo, the scotish kid, and probably nemeth. We have already enough experience in gerrard, Carra, Torres, aquilani, Joe Cole, agger, etc. Play a fast tempo counter attacking game ala Germany. You have to admit though that the squad left behind by Rafa have alot of promise. Just by adding a good player like Joe Cole, it's looking quite strong. This squad is alot stronger than what rafa inherited... He did a good job strengthening the youth squad. It is now up to Roy to try to reap what rafa had sowed. To not have faith in these promising youngsters would be foolish of Roy.

On another note, we have to absolutely have CLfootball next season, missing out on it, Torres will be gone IMO.

As far as this thread is concerned Magus, it's not really about whether Roy should sign Luke Young or whether or not he should play more youngsters. It's even less about whether or not Rafa improved the squad over six seasons (he did incidently IMHO) or whether or not he did "a good job strengthening the youth squad" (I don't really know enough about that one TBH). You see the minute you get involved in discussing matters such as those, it descends into the abyss quicker than a quick thing. You've only got to read through this thread to see that there is good reason for my thinking that such discussions are totally pointless.

I just thought it would be nice to have one thread on the boards where we could talk about football. Maybe I named it wrong, perhaps one of the moderators could change the thread to "Roy's Liverpool, how is it evolving?" or "Roy's Liverpool, do we like the way he's going?" or something. The only thing is, the thread then would just have turned into the same as all the others where people talk about prospective signings, the owners, the ex manager and all that. It looks like it's a forlorn hope my "football only and no politics" thread, but never mind.

My idea was to discuss the setup, the tactics, the method etc etc, regardless really of who is playing/who we are signing/the owners etc etc. It's obviously not going to happen as I've tried to explain it four or five times and not managed to get my point accross, I've probably just not done a very good job of explaining it.

I know this thread is not exactly about what I posted above bm, but what this thread is about, I got nothing much to say since it is only the beginning:D . That's why I posted what I think Roy should be  doing. In essence I believe it's the right time to bring in young blood which Rafa was not able or willing to do for numerous reasons. What the club needs now is continuation in terms of player development. Roy might set up the team differently to Rafa and employ different tactics, but player development should have continuation.

Sorted a new name out for you, Mick, based on the highlighted bits above.  It should be clearer now and it WILL generate some good discussion once the season proper begins.  :nod

he has used it for years but only on set pieces,i still think this will  remain but overall he will give more players a free run going forward and not restrict the whole team.

Zonal marking is only ever used on set pieces mate ? . As for freedom and free flowing football I'm not sure where the idea of that has come from as Hodgson as never been that type of manager - he sets his teams up to be solid throughout with a strong defensive base and a big man up front .

under rafa we covered areas not people all over the field.i expect  roy to be different as to employ a man marking approach rather than be ultra defensive everywhere.
i obviously dont know what formations or tactics he is going to employ over the coming season and i really hope he isnt going to turn us into a team where torres scores 35 and carragher sets up 30 of them.
this is a big step up for roy and imo his chance to show what he can do with a big club and get success.
the pressure is going to be there from the off and he will be judged on his performances and if we turn out to be fulham in disguise then he aint gonna last long.
you never know benni maybe we could see us playing with a sweeper next year!!

Dude, it's still zonal marking though. Sure a manager might assign one player to man-mark the opponents dangerman (it's happened to Stevie a few times) but it's fairly. If your playing with a Sweeper you might ask your 2 centre-halves to man mark the oppo's front 2 but essentially defending in football is all zonal. Your full-backs have an area to mark, when a player comes into that area they mark him, if there is no-one to mark they will likely tuck so you can go one spare in the middle. Likewise your wide midfield players.
