Roy's Liverpool - How's it Evolving? - Set Up, Tactics, In-Depth Footy Chat

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I thought that Roy's Liverpool was evolving quite well until I read that he is considering a £10m offer for Crouchie! Ffs what is that all about? It is a backwards move for a 29 year old striker who simply does not score enough goals. Crouchie has featured in 76 Premiership matches over the last two seasons and scored 11 goals. Last year he scored 8 goals for a very useful Spurs team featuring in 38 games. HE IS NOT THE ANSWER! Carlton Cole would be a better alternative for me.
Net Spend Over The Last 5 Years 20/21 to 24/25  (10 years
are in brackets 15/16 to 24/25 )
LFC €300m (€420m)
Everton +€33m (€211m)
Arsenal €557m (€853m)
Spurs €571m (€684m)
Chelsea €945m (€1051m)
Man City €370m (€1038m)
Man United €687m (€1240m)

To me it looked like we played a 4-2-3-1 with the three behind Wash interchanging all match esp Cole and Pacheco with Cole looking most effective when out wide a little more putting in some dangerous crosses . Because they didn't attack much it enabled both Kelly and Johnson to push up and support the two in the middle more and back up whoever was out wide . There was some lovely little move between gerrard cole and Pacheco and jovanovic provide a good outlet and was strong on the ball . Kelly was very impressive IMO and my MOM . The back two and keeper were hardly tested , Lucas and Gerrard kept things nice and tidy in the middle and Wash scored a great header and won a penalty - missed a few thou . Aqualini came on and did well and got stuck in a bit more and kept it simple and tight . It was a decent performance overall against a very poor team and the crowd realised this and were a bit muted during long periods . It's a good start but the real test will be Sunday against Arsenal and we will be tested a lot more . Expect the same team just changing Pacheco for kuyt . Some pointers for optimism but still some worries

I think your both probably right about the formation. It was certainly a 4-5-1 variant; it was our fairly standard setup which is usually called a 4-2-3-1 but the difference between that and a 4-4-1-1 is really very minimal. Formations tell you a bit, but lets face it the position of players is very fluid throughout a game and liable to change during the game.

Cheers lads for the information.

Helps me to understand (or at least) get an idea about what was tried and gives an inkling about what we're likely to use on the 15th.
I don't know about you lot but I can't wait for the season to start. I have a feeling that we're gonna be doing a lot better than expected.

We're going to see what Lucas is really capable of this season methinks. I really rate the lad...... Surprise package of the premiership. You heard it here first!

Ok I know the opposition were poor the other day but Gerrard deeper and Cole in the hole worked really well imo. I'd expect to see that again at the weekend with Jovanovic on the left and Ngog upfront. The only question is whether Kuyt or Maxi start on the right.

With players around him that can play slick one touch football I'd expect to see Gerrard back to his best after what can only be described as a disappointing season last term. You can see that he already has a good understanding with Cole. I think it sums it up when a finally fit Aquilani probably still won't get in the first eleven despite the fact that he's the best one touch player in the squad.

Anyway Sunday will be interesting in terms of approach. Arsenal are weak defensively and in goal but will still look to dominate possession. You caould see us sitting deep and getting a lot of success on the counter attack, a bit like the 4-2 game in the Champions League in 2008.

I can't see us trying to counter attack, or be effective in it.

In the 2008 CL game we had Torres playing off the shoulder, Ngog has sh!t pace.

Ngog does have pace - not as quick as torres but he isnt slow .

:D

i suppose the other option is to play cole on the left with aquilani in the hole and jovanovic upfront. from what i've seen of jovanovic he looks pretty quick but i've no idea whether he's effectively run the line in the past. i thought he was more of a wide forward in a front 3 or part of a strike partnership in a 4-4-2.

He is scoring goals at the moment so hopefully he can keep that up - we need him too
