Reoccurring injuries - Why so many?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

With Stevie G seemingly out of the Gooner's game, i was left wondering why we have been hit with some niggling, reoccurring injuries. Obviously, Torres ha this hamstring problem that he will try to sort out with the medical team in the close season, but why does it keep raising its head?

Is it because the muscles will never be as strong after they have been torn/stretched or do they get rushed back/selected before they are ready so there is never a proper heal of the injury.

If they aren't sorted out, we will again be with out El Nino for periods next season.

Can anyone give a biological reason or is it simply lack of recovery?

It's an interesting question, but I don't have the medical reports, if I had them I don't have the knowledge to understand them, so  I can say little.

The Doctors I've listened to about elite football and muscular injuries talk about muscular fatigue when they explain the reasons why a muscular injury appear.

In some cases, like the Torres one, it seems obvious that we could have avoided one of his re-ocurrances if we had rested him a bit longer. But it's a tricky decission, as competition asks you to have your players ASAP, and often, when you finally decide to play him again, the injury might reappear even if you "seem" recovered.

So I'm not sure it's a bad luck, our players playing a lot of games (rotation tries to fix this), the fact that players like Gerrard and Torres play a lot of games and international games, or a mix of all the reasons.

you could pay gerrard or torres 1m a week but they wouldn't try harder or be fitter.

my own view( based on total ignorance) is that when something is broken it is never as good again.

I remember ryan giggs (i only read some pages in a shop, didn't buy it, so don't abuse me) saying that he hasn't sprinted in a decade as his hamstrings can't take it.

I believe torres will never have 100 per cent hamstrings but will learn to play at 95 % and will probably miss ten games a  year.

I remember when Souness was in charge here we had a lot of injuries, and that trend continued when he went to Blackburn and even Newcastle.

That's because Souness used to join in the 5-a-sides in training and go through his own players

All injuries are different, but hamstring injuries are bad news and both hamstring problems and groin problems tend to be ones that recur for whatever reason.

Hamstring - Torres, Owen, Giggs, Henry

Groin - Gerrard, Kewell, Henchoz

There's just a few players off the top of my head that had those injuries, and they were ALL recurrent injuries.

What would cause a reccurence? Possibly over playing? Could be a case for Stevie to retire early from international duty. :D I know I would be delighted if that happened. I hate it when he goes away to play for England becasue I know he will be the only guy running his :censored: off.

I would love England to win the world cup next summer so Stevie could turn and say " Look, im 30 now, ive won the world cup so im gunna retire from international footie".  Torres will probably have one hamstring injury per season minimum. I suppose its something we have to get used to. Nando is going to play for Spain in the summer yet again, so the poor lads gunna be kettled halfway through next season. If i was Rafa I would possibly let Torres return to pre season in mid July, so he has a good month or 5 weeks off. Doubt thatll happen though.

Once you've badly injured a muscle/ligament/tendon there's always a weakness there, it's just the degree of weakness left that is variable.

Owen is the most tragic example.  I remember the first time his hamstring really went - against Spurs in a league cup game.  He was through on goal clear of their defence and it went - because of the position he was in though he kept running and put it in the net, you could see he was in agony.  That was the start of it and look at him.  He's 29 and hasn't been able to play sustained top level football since he was 25/26.

He's had operations and everything, seen that German sports injuries expert Wolfhart (or whatever he's called) and it's done no good.  I reckon because he had to change his running style to protect his hamstrings that that's why he's injuring everything else now - his hamstrings and knees and everything have gone now.

That's whay it's crazy those who want him back - the guy's an absolute wreck.  We need to be really careful with Torres.  If we can we should try not to play him more than once a week, but it's really difficult when we rely on him so much.

Soft ground, poor boots, overdoing warm up, overdoing warm down.

SSN stated the other week that Liverpool warm up longer than any other team an warm down longer than anyother team ( i dont have any facts on that).

The soft ground is somethinh Sammy Lee said when he comeback to the club.

The boots almost have no hard sole, this left the foot move better when hitting the ball but also put more strees on the leg when running as stated by craig johnson 4 years ago.
