Rafa's conference - 'the press are well informed'

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby <-alonso-> » Mon Aug 22, 2005 2:55 pm

at rafa's melwood press conference today, the press asked rafa, '' i see you are trying to buy a right winger and a center back''
''well, 2 center backs actually, from two clubs''
''would those clubs happen to be marseille and stutgart?''
stutgart, correct but not marseille, i see the media and pres are well informed''

who are we in for at stutgart?

A Portugese CB from Stuttgart. Look under LFC Media Watch on .tv, and click on the Liverpool Echo article

Rafael Benitez said Monday press reports linking Liverpool with central defenders on the continent are true but said he is no nearer to bringing the individuals to Anfield at this moment in time.
Names mentioned in the press were Portugese international 27-year-old Fernando Meira from Stuttgart, 20-year-old Danish international Daniel Agger and highly rated German teenager 19-year-old Lukas Sinkiewicz, from Cologne.

Benitez said: "I have read in the press about centre backs and the information was correct. The only problem for me is when you read that in the newspapers it means the clubs will put the price up for the player.

"Maybe one of the players plays for Stuttgart and the other for another club who I don't want to say. We have been linked with a lot of players and I need to talk with Rick Parry and my scouting department to see what we can do.

"I want a centre back and a right winger. I would like at least two new players, maybe two centre backs but we will have to see how much money we have available.

"We need to sell a player first to pay for Crouch and a new centre back and a right winger. We have possibilities and we will wait and see and be patient."
''I talk about the table. We need a leg, so I have bought a leg.'' Rafa Benitez

Meira sounds like a experienced player and probably would do well at LFC.  There isn't much time left, so hopefully Rafa can get a solid CB.

He has an official website HERE. It's only in German and Portuguese though.

I saw Sttutgart play recently but I don't think he played, can't remember. I know that Babbel was played as a CB though in that game.

Theres somthing about rafas interest in Dirk Kyut, and he says something along the lines of 'top scorer in the Dutch league, maybe cheaper then other options'

If this is true who would you prefere, Owen or Kuyt?

Although it could just be a way of trying to show Madrid that theres others so dont hold us to ransom!

Rafa's a smart man either way  :eyebrow

He's been a regular in the Portugal squad since the 2002 World cup but has never really broken into the starting eleven with guys like Couto and Jorge Costa ahead of him, and Carvalho and Andrade more recently, so I can't say I have seen much of him.

I'd prefer Andrade tbh, but only beacuse I've seen a lot more of him, and from what I've seen I have been very impressed.

I'd prefer Andrade as well but I've heard that he has a giant buy out clause in his contract
