PSV EINDHOVEN VS LIVERPOOL - Time to buck up lads

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

IF its true that it will be 3 at the back in an away champions league opening match in which a draw is fine by me I would go:
                   Reina
Finnan          Carra            Aurelio
           Sissoko       Alonso
Pennant        Gerrard          Zenden
             Bellamy      Kuyt

I prefer Gonzo to Zenden in most cases but this is PSV away, so I think Zenden is more likely to step his game up.  I would sub in Hyypia for Pennant and drop him to the back, move Gerrard to the right, and have momo and xabi play more forward like a traditional 4-4-2, unless we were losing, in which case I might try and put Crouch in for one of the strikers, or Garcia in for Pennant, bump Stevie to the right and have Garcia play a Centre Attacking Midfiled/ Centre Forward role, and put in Gonzo for Zenden to make the left side very pacey.

Rafael Benitez has rung the changes for Liverpool's opening group game in the 2006/07 Champions League by making six changes to the team that lost Saturday's Merseyside derby.
The big news is that captain Steven Gerrard starts on the bench, as does Sami Hyypia, Xabi Alonso, Peter Crouch and Luis Garcia.

Into the starting eleven comes Bolo Zenden, Daniel Agger, Stephen Warnock, Jermaine Pennant, Dirk Kuyt and Craig Bellamy.

Team in full: Reina, Finnan, Warnock, Agger, Carragher, Sissoko, Zenden, Aurelio, Pennant, Kuyt, Bellamy. Subs - Dudek, Hyypia, Gerrard, Garcia, Gonzalez, Alonso, Crouch.

Salcido has been picked as the man to watch tonight. It will show the likes of S@int that he's not a bad player, but a very talented one.

Steven Gerrard has not been selected for Liverpool. It is one of six changes from the team that lost to Everton with Daniel Agger, Stephen Warnock, Jermaine Pennant, Craig Bellamy, Dirk Kuyt and Boudewijn Zenden coming in.

Thats on BBC website - WTF?!

Team in full:

                    Reina

Finnan  Carragher  Agger  Warnock

Pennant Sissoko   Zenden  Aurelio

             Kuyt      Bellamy

Subs:

Crouch.
Garcia
Gonzalez
Gerrard
Alonso
Hyypia
Dudek

With minimal travel and 4 full days in between the PSV and Chelsea game, saving players for the Chelsea game was never an issue. So Rafa obviously believes we are better served in the PSV game with fresh players such as Zenden and Pennant rather than the players who went away on international duty and then played against Everton.

Rafa is a brave man to select a team like that, but he must have genuine concerns about the condition of the players that he has left out. If we do come away with a victory it will be hailed as a excellent result, but if we don’t do well he will face some fierce criticism from both the media and from Liverpool fans.

Is that true?, it's quite a shocking starting eleven. Gerrard and Alonso out, Aurelio not in his best position, Warnock in a tough continental game... worrying

come on mate we can all see its a strange team to pick, we are not saying its bad management, we could go on at win 0-5 all for we know right now....but its just a strange pick and gives the other team a boost.
