Possesion football - Have we forgotten it ?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

What happenend to "keep the ball ,deny the opposition , and then take control" ?

Todays game was more like a cup tie than a league match . Have we forgotten how to put our foot on the ball ,slow it down, play the simple ball keep possesion and let superior skill overcome the enemy ?
I saw 11 players in LFC shirts but I didn't see a Liverpool team out there today.
We can make all the excuses we want BUT the bottom line is we weren't good enough , maybe it's time to remember that in order to win a game you have to make sure you don't get beat .

Hate to say this but I think CL next season may now be beyond us . Massive reappraisal of just how good we are is now required.

Roll on next season ,when hopefully we can start again with a fully fit squad and some lessons learnt .

I'm not that quick to rule out 4th place yet, but we're requiring a big collapse from Everton now and hoping we can keep our noses in front of Spurs, Charlton, Newcastle and Boro.

Benetiz looks like he's started on a steep learnign curve and I feel that he has underestimated how difficult the league is in England. Garcia looks a delightful player at times, but needs to toughen up quickly or else he'll never adapt.

I think we have enough of imports from Spain now, and we should perhaps cast our eyes elsewhere for further reinforcements as I don't think its healthy to have too many players of a particular nationality in our squad as it can give rise to cliques.

Hopefully next season we'll start with a clean slate as far as injuries go and hopefully Cisse will recover and deliver on his potential, but from now to May its going to be a rough ride, and we may have to take the double massive disappointment of missing out on the CL and losing Steven Gerrard at the end of this campaign. If that happens we'll just have to deal with it.

know what you're saying about the lack of passing possesion football, woof. but i believe that benitez wants us to play that kind of game and i also believe that players like garcia are trying to play that kind of game. the problem is that it look slike its taking forever to get the players to adapt. we've seen loads of times how we've come out after half-time and played a good 20 minutes of football and then reverted back to hoofing and giving the ball away cheaply. benitez must be getting some kind of messgae across but he needs a to find a way of making it stick...

I don't know....the blue sh1ts have to drop a sh1t load of points...and lets face it (and it is really hard for me to say this)

Those players are giving 100% for their club every game...... That is mark of a sucessful team. Why do you think they score a lot of goals in the last few minutes.......

Very simply expressed and that is the problem!! The game being played by today's team and last Tuesdays team resembled something like 'Group Ping Pong' or a football game down a 'Pin Board Machine'. Whatever coaching the lad's are receiving it is resulting in a rash of hasty and often over-ambitious passes directed both long and short, but often more in hope than in certainty of reaching a Red repcipient.
We are most certainly missing Alonso!

Disagree lads.

I still think were the most likely team to get fourth place.

Never mind giving up on it - I think we should still be expecting it.

Out of all the teams in contention we have by far the best quality. We need to stop this current blip immediately. Once we gain some confidence and cohesion the results will come. We all know that Everton are at the start of a dramatic fall from grace. I don't even consider them when Im looking at the contenders for fourth place. Newcastle are a long behind us and they have Arsenal tommorrow.

I still think were favourites for fourth.

I stilll think its the mentality of the the team as a whole, if only one or two players is willing to fight for the team, others just watch and not moving around to help..how are we going to win anything. Our attitude towards the game is not positive at all, even like today 1 nil down early on, we should have fought back hard for every ball, pass with more pace.. etc, instead we are still playing the same stuff till half time...i

Sinana.. some nice dribbling skills.. looks a real prospect ... but badly missing creativity in midfield... heal quick Alonsooo .. we need ya

rafa dont play football like that he never has  , look at what he done last year , he done that with out  Possesion football , most game he won last year where buy counter attacks, at first you would think that that wopuld be good for liverpool as that is how we play but the speed of the prem is faster than what he knows and the way he sets the team up is wrong , stevie is told to stay back why?? i miss seeing him make long good passes he is playing more like a defender in this roll now
