Player of the season so far - Interesting point!

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

to be honest mate, i don't think alonso's performances have been consistent all season. i think he'd be the first one to admit that. earlier in the season he went through a spell when he quite clearly wasn't playing up to the standards which he sets for himself. however in the last 3-4 weeks he's been back to his brilliant best, culminating with his man of the match display on saturday.

Its brilliant to see that we dont rely on Gerrard as much as we used to, he is still massively important to us dont get me wrong, but he is not the run-away leader of the player of the season poll in my view, but thats not to say he isnt having a fantastic season, its just that other players are finally stepping up and being counted in their consistent performances this season!

Carra- another great season and at the heart of our clean sheets record!

Alonso- great season, very important getting us to tick and keeping the play flowing, very consistent

Gerrard- loads of goals and all action displays, rarely has a bad game

Sissoko- definitely young player of the year, we missed him a lot when he got injured, he does all the donkey work and never stops fighting to get possession back!

Kewell- not a leading contender for Player of the Year but has definitely improved a LOT this season and shud be commended for getting his act together, still more to come as well i feel!

Finnan- in my opinion player of the year so far, has really taken his game to another level and is relied upon a lot more for his consistency and hard work, players such as carra have come out n said how important he is to the team, a real unsung hero, just gets on with the job and very seldom lets his man get the better of him!

Would just like a few thoughts and opinions regarding this matter, but I think rafa and his backroom team shud get a special mention for improving the form and consistency of certain players as well!  :buttrock

ALONSO BY FAR , AGAINST EVERTON HE RAN THE SHOW EVEN HELPING OUT AT RIGHT BACK. I SAW HIM AGAINST CHELSEA AWAY LAST SEASON AND HE OVER HIT EVERY PASS, FREEKICK ETC THE MAN IS IN AWESOME FORM AT THE MOMENT AT THIS POINT HE IS AS IF NOT MORE IMPORTANT TO US THAN GERRARD.

I suppose his form this season hasn't been as good as what we first saw last season but I think overall he's been reliable, probably one of the few players we have signed to justify the price tag.

I just can'#t believe the amount of people here who refuse to acknowledge Gerrard as player of the season, I think they take him for granted. Anyone who thinks that Gerrard hasn;t been the most influencial player in the squad this season is just wrong. God i'm starting to sound like stu!

As I see it there are only three alternatives.

Carra, Gerrard and Pepe.

It without imo is Gerrard and hw will definately be in the top 2 or 3 for player of the year.
He has had an outstanding season for us scoring so many goals...when if we are honest the team wasn't scoring very often.
The likes of Reina Sissoko Carragher and Finnan have been consistent all season, and have helped the team push on in the league so much.
Alonso has been up and down, but crucially looks to be hitting the right form in time for the F.A cup semi final.
Crouch has been a big plus too, he has lead the line really well and allowed the midfield (Gerrard in particular) to break and score plenty of goals.
Some of the football we have played this season has been brilliant to watch, both Gerrards goals against Newcastle home and away were fantastic as was Garcia's in Betis.
If and when we get a right sided player to give us another option, and the striker we obviously still need (despite the recent goal glut) then i really think next season we could push Chelsea all of the way.
We have been remarkably consistent this season compared with last, and i think if a few of the other sides in the league went into games with Chelsea NOT believing they were beaten before they set foot on the pitch, then they would/and will drop plenty more points.
They are not THAT special and the smaller sides that roll over against them should watch the Fulham match last week.
Have gone well of track here  :D  Sorry it just feels like such an exciting time to be a Liverpool fan, and that the league title is not too far away.

That's a great point.  It has happened too often this season, but I think Chelsea will find it much harder next season.  Recently teams have been having more of a go at them and they haven't liked it.  They won't like having to scrap it out every week to win the league I don't think.

They will also have to trim the squad or replace a few this summer, or the likes of SWP who aren't playing will start asking to move.  I think next season will be a crucial one for Chelsea to be honest.

Im the hugest Kewell fan of them all. I love crouch, I think Xabi rocks.

My pick for player of the year is Steven Gerrard. He obviously impacts the game more than any other player by 50%.
Football is a simple game, all you have to do is pass the ball to a player in a red shirt.

All thanks to the midfielders.. The midfield general himself, the cultured midfielder and the playmaker.. Stevie G, Alonso and Kewell.. If only Liverpool had Joaquin.. It will be perfect.. Cheers..

Gerard by some considerable distance in my opinion.

Finnan has been as consistent as anybody, Reina has had a very good first season, Kewell has iimproved almost beyond recognition and Carra continues to impress on every level but in Stevie G we have a genuine world class talent and after the events of the summer were behind him he has shown above any other player what he can achieve.

He's played often on the right side and even though you suspect he would prefer to play there he has got on with it and become the best right sided midfielder in the prem by a country mile. Add to this nearly 20 goals in all comps, a tenacious tackler and all round complete player and it sure makes me glad he plays for us rather than against us ! :p
