The problem with Pennant is that his game hasn’t evolved one bit from when he first broke on to the scene. I am now one of his biggest critics but earlier on in his career I was a fan, he was young and some natural talent to work with, but he hasn’t improved at all. Now he is 23 and does the same things he did before.

He keeps talking about England but he hasn’t even found form with Liverpool yet, you just get the feeling that he feels he is already there in terms of being a top player. Either he is extremely arrogant or extremely stupid because his game is basic and nothing else, and that’s a sad situation to be in for 23 year old who thinks he can play for England.

I have come to the conclusion that what he has shown us is the limit of his abilities. I said before he arrived he will have to improve big time to be a success here, but I just don’t think he has it in him.

I haven't been impresed, but then that's no surprise as most of the forum members here have the same consensus. However, "Chile's best player" is nothing short of shocking. I don't know where this description of Gonzalez came from (Rafa said this, but what's the basis?).

Our wide men are perhaps Championship material at best.

Bavlondon, mate, as a true blue Liverpool fan, I'm hoping that our specialist wide men acquired in the summer (and also "Chile's best player") will prove me wrong soon that "...Our wide men are perhaps Championship material at best."

Pennant seems to have lost a lot of confidence of late... IMHO he's cutting in a little too early when he should be going wide and smacking the crosses in. He's got skill i'll give him that... and on a good day (early days of the season) he caused a lot of problems for defenders when he was dribbling down the line. Lately, his game seems a little half hearted and he looks like he's scared of the ball. I know for sure that possession is lost when there's a 50-50 ball and pennant is fighting for it. He draws back a little too quickly.

I have been extremely disappointed with gonzalez... there was so much hype surrounding him that I expected a lot more of him than what he has shown. Supposedly known for trickery speed and crosses. All I've seen so far is speed, there's not much trickery or crosses coming out of him as yet.

He tends to be a ball waster - tapping it past a defender and hoping that his speed will carry him to the ball. more often than not, he gets shoved off and loses possession. Granted he looks like he's got a mean shooting foot (feet) but accuracy still leaves a lot to be desired (notwithstanding the fact that he's already scored 2 goals). He also offers NOTHING defensively. Runs around the opposition like a headless chicken.

What I'm worried is that although he shone in the la liga, he maynever acclimatise himself to the premiership (like morientes). Hope that's not true though... He's still young... but then again... so are a lot of premiership players who offer a heck of a lot more than him without the accompanying hype.

It seems very clear to me that Pennant and Bellamy are struggling mentally rather than physically: both look bereft of confidence. Infact you could almost say they look stagestruck by just how big a step up they were making when they came here. Gonzalez has even fewer appearances and clearly has the biggest adjustment to make, but I think he's shown more flashes of potential than the others. However, I'll make my mind up in the summer.

One thing is clear, though. We absolutely have to go down the proven quality route in the transfer market from now on if we want to see significant and immediate improvements.

Agree.

Everyone said Cisse was a one trick pony who only kicked the ball in front and tried to run onto it.  However at least he tried to get to the byeline and get the ball in the box.  Pennant doesnt attempt to beat a player.  He takes the easy option and doesnt do what a natural winger should be doing.

but that one trick pony was more effictive than the so called natural winger in Pennant. How many times does Pennant actually attempt to get to the byeline.

Compare Pennant to his peers.

Ronaldo, Robben, Lennon, J Cole, Duff, SWP, Giggs all ahead of him.

Until we have wingers as good as Giggs/Ronaldo, J.Cole/Robben, we wont match those clubs.

Pennant is barely good enough for a mid table club.

pennant has the talent, there's no doubt and he was easily the best player at Brimingham for the past couple of seasons. Whether he can step up and become what his talents shlould propel him to at a big club is down to him.

I wonder if it is the pressure that's getting to him and that is stifling him from showing his true abilities. Whatever, at 7 million, it is a valid concern on for all of us. I'm more concerned at Gonzalez's lack of ability to run past people with the basic skills of wingplay, seems to me that this guy only has pace and nothing else. Sabre had seen quite a lot of him in Spain, care to enlighten us?
