Penalty shoot out - Reina

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Now we are at the business end of the world cup, I was just thinking last night about the penaty shoot outs.  If Spain end up in a penalty shoot out or it looks like the game is heading that way do you reckon the manager will keep a sub space and put reina on for pens.

Think of the psychological advantage this would have over the opposition

Or is it just a load of nonsense

If it were going to a penalty shootout i would think they would use the extra sub to bring on a player who is good from set pieces. Im sure Cassilas is just as able for penalties.

Fair point but he has a rep as a penalty saver, I know its a American football type of thing to do but it does make sense to me

Casillas is a pretty good penalty saver himself.Just ask any Ireland fan.

I think if Spain had not used there substitutions and it was approaching penalties that is something that should be considered.
Casillas is a great shot stopper, but Reina's anticipation is the best i have seen. Penalties are hard to take under pressure and with Reina in goal i think it would easily enhance Spains chances.
It probably wouldnt happen, but you never know.

I would think Spain would use their three substitutions for other positions.  Besides, just imagine the second-guessing if Aragones put Reina in and he DIDN'T save any penalties and Spain lost.  Reina might be a bit better than Casillas at saving penalties, but I don't see Aragones make that change.

I hope Pepe will get into the match, but I highly doubt it.  Still, I can always hope.

Not many coaches would take such a risk with his international reputation.  It would give the opposition the advantage of having three pairs of fresh legs in extra-time too.  I can only see eccentric coaches or coaches with nothing to lose pulling such a stunt.

In my opinion I think Luis Aragonés would be stupid to bring on Reina for a penaly shootout. Yes Reina is a very good keeper who is good at saving penalties, but so is Iker Casillas. I'd rather bring on an extra penalty taker, than bring on a goalkeeper.
