Apparently signed and sealed. Medical on Saturday but will play out the rest of the season with his old/current club

Argentine Defender

What do we know of this lad? He does seem to be highly thought respected and a possible star of the future.

I have discovered from several reliable sources that we have signed a new defender from argentine

His name is Gabriel Paletta and he plays for Banfield. Banfield has done remarkably well recently and their defensive record has been good. Some stats:

1 Boca 1.724 98 169
2 Vélez 1.673 98 164
3 River 1.633 98 160
4 Banfield 1.602 98 157
5 San Lorenzo 1.459 98 143
6 Estudiantes 1.429 98 140
7 Newell's 1.398 98 137
8 Arsenal 1.388 98 136
9 Colón 1.378 98 135
10 Racing 1.367 98 134
11 Independiente 1.347 98 132
12 Gimnasia 1.327 98 130
13 Rosario Central 1.306 98 128
14 Quilmes 1.286 98 126
15 Lanús 1.255 98 123
16 Argentinos 1.233 60 74
17 Olimpo 1.112 98 109
18 Gimnasia (J) 1.091 22 24
19 Instituto 0.950 60 57
20 Tiro Federal 0.818 22 18

As you can see over the last 98 games they have been almost as good as River and Boca and far better than Independiente, Racing, Newell's...

Paletta has been in Liverpool together with his agents and the deal will be finalized in the summer. He will be revealed very soon and the agreed upon price is about 3 million euro.

from argentinian paper:
VIAJE A LIVERPOOL

I don't know much about the player. All I know is that he is born in 1986 and was part of the argentinian youth team that won the world championship. He can be used in several positions and was tipped to go to River Plate as Daniel Passarella wanted him badly. But now it seems like he will be part of the Rafalution here.
If football is banned in heaven. I'd rather go to hell.

Can anyone find more info on Paletta - he's down on Banfield's site as a Midfielder.

Mate, I made a call like that towards the end of this transfer window, and got bollaxed!!

I'd wait until LFC.TV makes the announcement before making any assumptions. My source was skysports also, and although its a reputable source sometimes, they can get it wrong badly. Until then, it should be in the rumors thread.

It's being reported as a done deal in Argentina. I would have waited until the club confirmed the deal, though..

I've haven't seen Paletta play much, really. The few times I did, he was fairly solid except for one time. I was watching the highlights from a Banfield game a few weeks ago, and he was directly at fault for two goals. One was I guess a counter-attack play, and as the defence was rushing back a cross came in and Paletta went to head the ball out of play but did so too softly and headed the ball directly to a player coming in from the wing (Which the cross was intended for). He scored. I forget what the other goal was like, but I remember him making a mistake  He does like to get forward quite a bit, and that he does fairly well . I remember him scoring a nice goal or two from distance for Banfield. Anyway, it seems like a decent signing for us. I would take him over someone like Whitbread every time, from what I've seen of Whitbread.
