Owen - To barcelona?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Starbridge42 » Sat Apr 24, 2004 1:15 pm

Barcelona boss Frank Rijkaard has hinted that the Spanish club could be preparing a summer swoop for Liverpool striker Michael Owen.

The Catalan giants are said to have a £50million transfer kitty at their disposal and are reported to be willing to splash out half of it on the 24-year-old England forward.

'We need a fast striker who is also technical and knows how to create numerous goalscoring opportunities,' Rijkaard told the Daily Mail.

'Am I referring to Owen? What do you think?'

Would Owen go to the Catalan giants though?  Or would he stay here?

I think Owen would love Barcelona. Hes in a similar vein to Saviola though and they may be too similar to play together.. maybe they were talking about heskey :p
If Owen goes to spain it would be to barca but i can see him going somewhere in Italy or spain in the sumemr and the £25 mill would do us a lot of good

I don't know if this is true but doesn't Owen have the same agent as Beckham?  SFX I mean.  I know Beckham's left them now but I remember reading that Gaspart and co were really annoyed with them last Summer as they gave them the runaround regarding Beckham and they then came out and said, "if you ever need us in the future, we won't be there for you".

So if Owen does want a move, will Barcelona listen?  That's all probably water under the bridge now though and if Rijkaard wants him, there might be something to it.  Personally, I thought they were looking at Trezeguet but with Michael's contract only a year from expiring, perhaps he'd be a cheaper option.

This is not true. Barca will never buy Owen, and £ 25 millions? Get a grip. For that amount they could sign Van Nistelroy or Henry. They are miles ahead of Owen in every departement.

Shankly to Smith:Oh no son.You are wrong, son. It is not your leg.

I think Henry's contract expires in 2006. So if Henry refuse to sign a new contract Wenger have to sell him or let him do a Bosman. £ 25 millions in a shitload of money. You can buy Crystal Palace and Reading for that amount. :D

I see your point but Henry's as happy as the proverbial pigs at Arsenal and will sign a new contract as soon as it's on the table

Whoever is in charge will get a hell of a lot of criticism if they sell the England Centre Forward unless the replacement is absolutely top class. If this guy is the best for England he's certainly the best for Liverpool, the only thing we need to worry about is if he wants to leave.

Owen has been a very loyal and good player. The way Liverpool is playing right now, I wouldn't blame Owen if he goes and will not have any hard feelings. Players' careers are very short and Owen deserves a better opportunity to play top European games if Liverpool can't provide that, as he has been magnificent.
I just hope that if Leverpool ever sold him for 25 million, that French Toad won't be the manager to waste on one or two unknown "potentials".
For all of the criticism Owen has been getting lately, I hope he gets to becoma one of the top scorers in Europe and enhance his market value. If we are all loyal Liverpool supporters like what we claim to be, we should not bedgrudge Owen if he decides to move on

If GH stays as liverpool manager (which looks increasingly the case), then Owen will not make much impact here. Just look at match against manure, Owen was again playing by himself. GH new formation seems to be 4-1-3-1 (ie....4 defence, 1 defensive midfielder, 3 attacking midfielders, 1 striker).

Owen is not the player for this kind of formation. Heskey would be more of an impact here....
