the reading game in midweek got me thinking. it was the carling cup, so we got a first chance to see charles itandje in action. i thought he played ok, but he did look a little ring rusty on occasion. imo this was down to the fact that he has been with us for about a month now, and has only just got to play in a competitive match.

its pretty similar to what happened to dudek last season against arsenal, he didn't play for ages, and when he finally got a game, not suprisingly he wasn't at his best. of course he took the blame for the two defeats, even though it wasn't wholly his fault - if benitez had given him a couple of run-outs in the league, he might have been a bit sharper against arsenal in the cups.

as far as i'm concerned, our second keeper needs to be played more often, so he can keep a decent level of match sharpness throughout the season. also, if reina is injured (touch wood!) it might take 4-5 games for itandje to get used to the style of play in the epl. and we can't afford that if we want to compete for the league this season. naturally, if we were to lose pepe for a lengthy spell, it would be a major blow, but it would be a disaster if itandje wasn't immediately up to scratch when called upon.

I don't think we can afford to rotate our goalkeeper, we just have to hope that Pepe stays fit and maintains his form.

i dont think reina should be rotated. its a disaster. lets charles play in league and fa cups.

I agree, we have to play our best keeper and hope he doesn't get injured. If we're going to start playing players to make sure they're in passable form then we'd have a ridiculous situation. I think Itandje said himself he expects to play in cups and, while I don't think Reina needs resting, that suits me. I think I'd have five or six players who don't play in the Carling Cup and I'd suggest Torres, Carragher and Gerrard should have been three of those.

Surely we would be risking points if we played him without Pepe being injured?

It's a fair point that should Itandje be needed to appear in the league he may not be properly accustomed or prepared for the rigours of the premiership. Roatating a goalkeeper though just for the sake of giving a backup keeper experience is just madness .
It's the last line of defence (no shit Sherlock )and can be the difference between a loss or a win/draw. The modern day keeper knows that if they find themself on the bench they have to be prepared to play a blinder when they get a chance, even in a team that they've never played in before if they want to hold on to that one goalie spot in the team.

On the little I've seen of him "risking points if we played him" is something of an understatement , I know it's only one performance that I've seen but it's  possibly the most unconvincing debut I've witnessed from a Liverpool keeper. If Pepe's injured god help us .

Yes I agree it's a position to do little changes, but I like the fact that jaytoothetee acknowledges that a rusty game is just that, the consequence of not playing together with the same back 4 regularly, as many fans jump easily in the conclussion that a keeper is not good enough just because in a couple of actions he lacks confidence.

A change in the keeper might not only affect the goal itself but the CBs too, I'd continue giving chances in the Carling cup to Itandje, it's a competition that if you reach the semifinal then players like Itandje feel they're part of the squad and you keep the player happy, and it's much more than a friendly, so the player has the chance to show the manager he's ready just in case he's needed.
