Van Gaal has a proven track record at all the clubs he's been to, he might be a disciplinarian who has clashed with people in the past, but that's just the way it goes in football. Not that im aware off - he wanted to be DoF at Ajax but Cruyff blocked the move hence their falling out

I would have Van Gaal as manager in a heartbeat and short of that as DOF
with a Martinez/Rogers type.

If we can attract Van Gaal into either job I think he will be a tremendous
assett and so far as being a dictator then I am all for that if it gets results,
and he ususally does.

Clearly taking players to pop concerts and bringing back the smiles did not help
Dalglish so if we cant tease it out we will beat it out of them.

Lets face it, they are paid enough and need to be professional and focused on
ther jobs and from what Ive read Van Gaal wont give them a moments peace.

According to http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/liverpool/9292139/Liverpool-owners-Fenway-Sports-Group-sounding-out-experienced-Dutchman-Louis-van-Gaal-for-senior-role.html (a reasonably scary read) the two jobs Commoli's role is being split up into are "sporting director" aka van Gaal and "technical director" aka Peg Segura.

Anyone got any ideas or guesses about what the purpose of the two roles would be?

Smith out of Reds running

Sky Sports understands Gordon Smith has withdrawn his interest in becoming Liverpool's director of football.

Liverpool's American owners are thought to be keen to bring in director of football to work in their tiered structure at Anfield.

A number of names, including Louis van Gaal, have been linked with the role to fill the position left by Damien Comolli's departure in April.

Former Rangers director of football Smith was also in the frame for the role at Liverpool, but his adviser, Jonathan Hope, has confirmed the ex Scottish Football Association chief executive has ruled out a switch to Anfield and is considering several offers from abroad.

"My client Gordon Smith was in talks via myself for the Liverpool FC director of football role, although Gordon has had no talks with the club, I have," Hope told skysports.com.

"I have spoken with the general manager on several occasions and I have decided to pull my client away from the role as we have options in the Middle East.

"Liverpool has become a second home to me because of my involvement with Vaughan Boxing but as a football prospective I believe this would be the wrong move for my client.

"I am not going to hold any more talks about Gordon Smith joining Liverpool Football Club.

"We have options abroad and I will spend a few days with Gordon and discuss what's best for him and his family.

"I have always maintained Gordon was used at Rangers FC for his credibility and nothing will change my mind on that.

"Gordon Smith and myself would like to wish Liverpool FC every success in the future. Gordon Smith and myself have a relationship and a friendship. I'm not his agent but his representative in football matters."

Smith has confirmed he has left it up to Hope to find him a new role in football.

"Jonathan Hope has been working non-stop to find not just a job, but the right job for me," he said.

"That's important and I commend him for it as that's what being a real agent is all about - client care.

"I respect whatever Jonathan Hope decides."

i like the way rodgers has put his foot down over van gaal, that was never going to work, he has a lot of control over the football side now.
really warming to him, i sort of imagined he`d be a yes man but he`s making FSG review their plans.

van gaal wont be coming, sky news were outside the ground before and the reporter said that it`s emerged from the meeting that when werner and henry mentioned DoF`s to rodgers he said he didnt want one above him and he was prepared to walk away if he didnt have total control over every aspect of the footballing side of the club including transfers.
werner and henry were that impressed by him in general and his overall vision that they agreed to ditch the footballing DoF, you`ll probably get someone like pep segura being promoted to run the admin side but rodgers is the going to be the man that runs everything on the football side.
he is really starting to impress me.

New Liverpool FC boss Brendan Rodgers to work with specialist football executive team

LIVERPOOL FC will appoint a team of  specialist football executives to work around new boss Brendan Rodgers and his coaching staff.

But veteran Dutchman Louis van  Gaal will not be among the new faces,  which are set to be unveiled next  week.

Sixty-year-old former Ajax,  Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach  van Gaal did express interest in a  hands-on role at Anfield, but his offer  has not been taken up in any capacity  and he will not now be going onto the  club’s payroll.

The radical new club structure will  see several new faces arriving at  Anfield soon, to work alongside  Rodgers and his backroom staff, with a  remit ranging from the negotiation of  transfers to more logistical, analytical  duties.

It is unlikely that one man will be  given the title of ‘Football Director’ or  ‘Sporting Director’. Instead its  component responsibilities  will now be split  between a new group,  bolstering the Reds’ American  Revolution under the  Boston-based Fenway Sports  Group.

Txiki Begiristain, formerly  Director of Football at  Barcelona, is one name that  has been linked with a senior  role, whilst Pep Segura,  currently technical manager  of the Reds’ Kirkby Academy,  has been tipped to take a more  prominent position during  this latest reshuffle.

The news comes as  Northern Irishman Rodgers,  who informed sources stress  was always Liverpool’s  number one choice to replace  Kenny Dalglish, was today set  to be unveiled as new Reds  boss at an Anfield press  conference.

Having conducted an  extensive, and exhaustive recruitment process, FSG do not believe that the traditional English model of having a  manager in sole charge of all football-related duties – and thereby overloaded with tasks which often require extra support and back-up expertise – is ideal when looking to deliver a winning formula.

Their plans for Liverpool  mirror the structures in place  at many sports teams and  franchises in the USA, where  FSG restored the Boston Red  Sox baseball team to glory  with a first World Series  triumph in more than 80 years  in 2004.

Rodgers, who the ECHO  understands has signed a  three-year deal, was being  confirmed as manager today  at a morning press  conference.

The 39-year-old will bring  with him three key members  of his Swansea backroom  staff, with a compensation  package of up to £7million  negotiated with the Welshmen  over the past 24 hours.

Colin Pascoe, Rodgers’  assistant at the Liberty  Stadium, is moving to Anfield,  with Head of Sports Science  and Medicine Glen Driscoll,  and highly-rated performance  analyst Chris Davies also  joining him, forming the basis  of the Reds’ new-look coaching  team.


What that means for  current Reds staff, such as  assistant boss Steve Clarke  and first-team coach Kevin  Keen, is yet to be confirmed.

The ECHO, however,  understands that both are  likely to depart the club in the  wake of Rodgers’  appointment.

It is also believed that  reports linking the Reds with  a bid for midfielder Gylfi  Sigurdsson are wide of the  mark.

The Icelandic international  had been due to sign for  Swansea in a £7.2m deal from  Hoffenheim before Rodgers  departed, and sources in  South Wales remain confident  a deal for the 22-year-old, who  spent the second half of last  season on loan at the Liberty  Stadium, will still go through,  despite the exit of the  manager.
