New anfield - Are we giving up too much

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby J*o*n*D*o*e » Tue Sep 05, 2006 12:08 am

news reports today state that the club is close to completing it obligations in relation to its part in providing funding for the new stadium

report

i was always in favour of the club building a new stadium and i guess i still am but recently i have been having second thoughts on the idea, yes we need more bums on seats if where going to keep up with other clubs but is a new stadium the only answer, the club own alot of the buildings around the ground already and i cant believe that with all that land they couldnt increase Anfields capacity above 55,000.

Anfield is our spiritual home, one of the most famous grounds in the world, like wembley players from around the world want to play there, the fans famous not only for there wit but there generosity to sides who come to give us a game,i guess after watching the kop celebrate its 100th birthday this week and reliving some of the great games and nights im beginning to wonder are we giving up too much for a shiny new bowl.

i know this issue has probably been debated to death and anything we say here will not do anything to stop the move, i guess im just curious that now the move is looking more likely whether anyone else has wondered are we really doing the right thing, i cant help looking at our rivals down the eastlancs with a little envy seeing what they have done with there ground.

I think the council jibed the expansion idea coz people wernt prepared to get their houses bull dozed around anfield to make way for a capacity upgrade and they wouldnt budge on the issue, am not sure though. If we do get a new stadium, one way of financing it could be to give sponsorship rights to say calsberg and some food company so that only their ale and scran can be sold in the ground for 5 years or so, am sure whatever sponsor would invest in that kind of deal would get their money back quickly coz of all the people who would be buying the food and ale it would be quids in. So they could help build the stadium and the club allows them rights to ale or scran for a certain amount of time, could work i reckon, They have that kind of deal in america with pepsi and sh.it. Saw that idea in the kop mag the other week :D

Anfield is an institution in it's own right, and surely the Council could issue a compulsary purchase order on the bitter sh*tholes around the ground? I know it's not PC, and it's probably not moral to push out a chimp from his home.

But neither is a bitter b*stard and his animal family stopping the most famous ground in World football from remaining OUR home.

The Council need to realise that when your city is honoured enough to have an internationally recognised and reveared landmark, you can't p*ss about with the morons from the swamp across the park when they want to throw a banana in the works.

I know what I'd do.

I'd kill them. :D

Seriously, though, I never want LFC to leave Anfield. The place has a soul.

I don't like some of these modern stadiums.

They are all giant bowls. Generic and boring.

Check out this design. Very innovative:

Looking at the picture of the locality around Anfield from the link provided by The Manhattan Project, there is little room for expansion with the houses being so close nearby Anfield unless those houses are acquired, the tennants evicted out and demolished.

When I heard we were looking to move stadiums I was really upset to think one of the most famous and historical grounds in the world would be no more. As time has gone on, I've got my head around the idea, but not more heart. These days in football money talks and the extra revenue given to us on a fortnighly basis with 10,000 or more seats would be a big big help. We've got to keep in touch with ManU and Arsenal finacially aswell as on the pitch, but it does sadden me to think of leaving our pastime behind, On the otherside though its also the fans who go a very very long way to making a stadium so special like Anfield, and with the best fans in the world our new home would instantly become another historical part of L.F.C :)

Nice design, but unpractical in England due to the fact it has no roof and takes up a lot of land.

I agree with you though, that some of the stadia being built now is too generic. Personally, I think the new Arsenal ground looks awful - what's with the big holes at the back of the stadium, surely this will affect the atmosphere.

I think the Japanese had some great original ideas in prep for the 2002 World Cup.

Personally, I'd love to see Anfield extended. The place has such a history and holds so many memories. I understand that the club owns the stretch of Anfield Rd behind the stand and also the houses behind the main stand on Lothair Rd. If thats the case, I'd love to see the Annie Rd, the Centenary and the main stand knocked down and replace by one big "horseshoe" shaped stand with the Kop remaining as it is.

The Annie road end is where a big problem lies because behind it there is only one rd then the park so unless we can build on that part of Stanley park the chances of increasing that stand would be difficult.
The main stand is one where if we could bulldoze the houses then it could be massively improved and increase the capacity by alot.
If its possible to get to 55,000 and stay at Anfield i am sure almost every fan would want that.

A new ground is essential. We have to move forward and compete with the other clubs here. Old Trafford 76k, Emirates 60k. Even Newcastle get 55k. Chelsea have a smaller ground but they don't exactly need money.

Anfield has the best atmosphere ever, but it's not like the fans will change. A new bigger ground with better acoustics will have an unrivalled atmosphere, no club in the world will be able to make as much noise.

Anfield has a host of memories of past achievements which we should always treasure. At the same time we should look to the future and let our generation make its own memories.

Am not sure but didnt liverpool tell the people who wouldnt move that they'd re-house them into better houses or something like that, leaving room for us to expand anfield but they said nar the kunts.

It would be cheaper to expand rather than build a new stadium so staying put would be the best thing for everyone but unfortunately that doesnt look likely, it will be a bastarding shame if we do have to move, am still hopeful that we will stay and find a solution.

for the people on here who dont know the exact location of the new stadium then take a look at the pic below, in the picture ive also marked out areas near the ground that the club have already purchased (not all the properties are empty but the place is an eyesore so i doubt there would be any problem in purchasing the rest) ive also taken the liberty of re-routing anfield rd just to show how easy it would be for the club to gain the land it would need to expand anfield.

Image

the club has already said it could only expand anfield to 55,000, the new ground will hold 60,000 so where moving for an extra 5,000 seats at a cost of 180 million, thats provided between now and work starting the labour and material costs dont increase, now the extra cash that 5,000 seats will provide will go some way to help us keep up but it will hardly make us chelski-eque, like Sabre pointed out in the other thread the money in football today is in tv rights, merchandise and sponsorship.

since ive read the lasted update on the project and the likelyhood that it will now go ahead im beginning to wonder if where about the make a very big mistake indeed.
