Fifa rules state that one footballer cannot play for more than two clubs between 1 July and the end of the following June - and Mascherano has already turned out for Brazilian side Corinthians and West Ham since last summer.

Yeah but surely he's only played for one team during this campaign?

The South American season ended on December 31, 2005, before Mascherano joined West Ham in the summer of 2006.

to be honest, i don't fully understand the ruling....but its reported he cannot go until June because he's played for 2 clubs in 1 season?

i think he may have played for Corinthians after the league finsished - cup games or friendlies or whatever. if he hadnt then there wouldnt be an issue.

but on trying to find out i stumbled upon this written by a brazilian on a west ham site:
Tevez did play very well in 2005. He was arguably one of the best players ever to wear Corinthians' jersey. I am very thankful for what he did for us. In 2006 it was clear he wanted to leave the team. He would travel to Argentina whenever he wanted and played only in the games he felt like playing. He played enough to be called to the national team and play the World Cup.
As far as Mascherano goes, he is an average player. He is a bit overrated, but I think he had a different character. Leaving without notice really ruined his reputation worldwide, I believe.
That's argentinian's for you. They think they are the best and think that they are above the law.
Don't be surprised if they leave WHU by the end of the season or even before that.... This may sound like I am crying, but I am not. Ever since they left, Corinthians has lost only one game in 10 played and left the relegation zone. Now we are in the hunt for a spot in the Libertadores Cup. Tevez and Mascherano were the "cancer" on our team if you will.
They were fighting with teammates during practice, had their own hours and did whatever they wanted. This is just warning for you guys for what may be coming your way.

and as he hasnt stated for west ham recently... and other clubs are turning noses up.... i've got the feeling he's abit of a c0ck with maybe a diouf/anelka/cisse attitude

that makes some scary reading....especially when you consider the fact that West Ham finished in the top half of the table and reached the FA cup final last season.

If rafa wants Mascherano, bring him in on loan, because

a) we don't know who owns the player or his contact and this made Juventus pull out of a possible transfer

b) he cannot get into a West Ham team

c) he seems to think he's 10x better than he really is

How about the idea of a 5 across the middle and a hard working striker up top, similar to Rafa's previous methods abroad. Such as CB or Kuyt....(the latter of whom would be freed from the shackles of coming deep for the ball too often.  Instead Kuyt could play much higher up, where i believe him to be most effective..and thrive on the service allowed by the inclusion of a solid holding player, freeing the likes of SG and XA to support the framework.

for instance would anyone fancy this line up (Should, the signings of course go to plan - and quite obviously being a specific set-up for certain games):

      FINANN    JC    AGGER(?)      NEILL

                  MASCHERANO
      GERRARD                    ALONSO
PENNANT                                 RIISE(?)
                      KUYT(?)


Just a suggestion...looks a strong side in any case, should it come off.

I like the look of that team but the wide players are not good enough imo.
Pennant had a decent game against Bolton but with one striker you need your wide players to contribute plenty of goals, Riise might score about 7-8 but he wastes posession too often to play that high up the pitch.
If we had 2 goalscoring wingers then that formation would be great, not with the current personnel though.

No Ace, i fully agree...the only two who i believed to be (better there at present, for various reasons).  As you rightly say, there are other perms' which might fit the bill on another day. Whether its Garcia/Gonzalez/Aurelio etc...or even Gerrard again (which i wouldnt rule out) they (whoever) need to provide much more of a presence to the attack, to call it a 'watertight' setup.

Kronkamp wasn't a total disaster....at least we got our money back from the Josomi transfer when we sold him.

I cannot see where he is gonna play for liverpool though.  damn even when Sissoko is back he might find himself on the bench more regular than not if Rafa keeps Gerrard in the middle.

Exactly.

He's played a total of 6 minutes for West Ham since October. Hardly a reason for anyone to say he's not cut it. He's not been given the opputunity to make anyone think either way.

I would suggest he would be direct opposition to Alonso with Sissoko and Gerrard fighting it out for the further forward of the 2 central midfielders.

On the odd occasion we play 5 in the middle, we would probably go back to the Valencia method of Alonso, Gerrard and one of Sissoko/Mascarano, plus two wingers, one of which would probably be Garcia.

I see no probelms with those two systems, and Mascherano would give us that Hamann-esque player we do need. I have been saying it for ages that Hamann was a big loss, Alonso just doesn't do quite the same job.

I got no problem with him complaining about not playing.  he just like Tevez have been treated like dirt and it is totally unfair,  I do not think he would expect to walk into the Liverpool team, I think he would welcome the opportunity of actually getting the chance to prove himself and fight for his place.

he is not getting that chance at west ham.

Dont get me wrong, im an admirer of Sissoko; both his industry and the lads character. But for me, it would be him that is 'benchable' should it come down to a choice of 3+2 wide men. Which St mike has picked up on from previous posts...

But are these 'Momo' pro-activists, the same ones who will be calling the lad rotten (perhaps rightly so..?) in a few weeks time, i wonder.

I dont know what the fuss is about..If it all happens that is.  Simple...keep Alonso/Gerrard/Mascherano and Sissoko - the latter of which is one of the stronger options to use where some 'good old-fashioned' ball-busting work is needed in 'Breaking up' the more awkward sides who decide to park the bus.  To all intents and purposes and with the way Rafa works, i dont see a problem at all in keeping the 4 of them happy. I dont for one minute go along with these 'scare stories'.  at least not the continuation of them here, should the fella actually arrive in any case...

For me, Sissoko is the weaker of them and who could be made best use of from the bench. Again, not in every game because there will be several when his talents will be necessary at the frontline..but the crux of all this semi-speculation has to be the future of Bolo Zenden. Now there IS a piece of the puzzle, one too many.... Tara i think i'd be saying.  We can only wait and see..
