breaking news on the bbc website has just said that neil mellor and ex-red david thompson have both signed for wigan until the end of the season.

infact here's the link from skysports

good for neil mellor i say, since the proposed move to hearts broke down. it's just good that he's back fit again and hopefully he'll get some first team action at wigan.

They've also signed Davey Thompson, good signing for them if he can stay fit. Infact, i'd go as far to say as an excellent signing if he can stay fit.

I can see Mellor scoring a few goals there aswell. :)

I don't think Mellor is good enough for the premiership to be honest.  He's too slow.  And I'm not just talking about sprinting, it's his whole game, he's slow on the ball and he turns like a cart-horse.

He's dangerous in the penalty box though and I'm sure he'd do well in a Championship team, but I'll be very surprised if he makes an impact at Wigan.  Good luck to him though, he deserves it after all his injury problems.

Thompson is a good player, as Stu says he'll be a good signing for them if he gets an injury-free run.

Mellor will ALWAYS score goals and with the correct fitness training can be good enough for the premiership. Good enough for the top level, i doubt it, but defeinately a good goalscorer.

I think Mellor is a hilarious looking player. :D

Imagine what he'll look like when he's 48. :D

Not sure about that Stu.  He didn't exactly set the world alight during his loan spell at West Ham.  In fact he even struggled to get a game for them, and that wasn't even in the premiership.  He played second fiddle to Connolly and Zamora if I remember.

In fact the only team he has ever looked totally convincing in is our reserves.  He chipped in with a few important goals for us in the first team last year, but to be honest I was never really convinced by him.

I reckon he'll get games for Wigan at the moment as they have injury problems, but I don't think he would even start in a full strength Wigan team to be honest.

He'd score goals anywhere. He knows where the net is and can take a chance.

He scored 5 in 16, not all of them were starts. He alway set Gerrard's volley up against Olymiacos. He's a decent player lacking fitness. He'll never be top class, he'll never contribute greatly to alround play but he can do a job and he's good at taking chances.

He's a damn site better at finishing than Sissy and he's sore probably about 60% of the amount of Goals Sinama's scored, considering how many games they've both played kind of says it all.

good signing, the pair of them. mellor looks like stevie if u ask me but in the reserves a few eyars back set the standard for scoring. thompson will always be one my faves.

good luck to both players i say

david thompson has outstanding ability but he's another one who's had a questionable attitude and shocking injury record down the years.

i remember us playing sheffield wednesday at home in 1999 i think it was. stevie g and thompson both scored outstanding goals in that game and they looked like the future of our midfield. unfortunately for thompson it never worked out.

good signing for wigan though.

He's a poacher.  He'll score if he gets a chance in the box.  I always think players like that are underrated.  It's all well and good having pace to burn like Cisse, but who's going to get you more goals?

I feel tha same mr john caig. It's a pity though as Neil Mellor is a likeable guy. He is simply too slow. He is Morientes when you take away Morientes' experience and ball skills. Mellor has also recently had a long injury layoff and that means trouble. Jason Roberts has had a good seaon for them and he is for me a much better player than Mellor. Hopefully Mellor will shine and we'll get a good price for him come summer 2006.

On a side note, is it just me or does Mellor and Paul Jewell look quite alike?

Ermmm, I think it might be just you mate.

On the question of mellor, I'm with John on this. I don't think he's even close to being a Premiership player and would have taken the 500k we were offerd last season. Simply not up to it in my view.

I was thinking that same thing earlier. They do have certain facial features that seem to match. He done ok for us. I know he was prolific in the reserve for scoring but he scored 2 important goals for us last season. One against Olypiakos and the other against Arsenal.
