Need to know! - Famous quote - who said it?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Help! Urgently need to know.

Someone said, some time during the 70s and 80s, something along the lines of,

" to be successful you need to have three Scotsmen in your team; any more is asking for trouble."

Who said it, and what exactly did they say? I'm thinking it must have been Paisley or Shankly (though it could have been Don Revie in reference to his Leeds teams).

I need an answer asap, please; it's for a football journal i'm writing.

I remember Ian St. John recalling this on T.V. years ago on the classic (out of date and ******) 'Saint & Greavsie' show.  I'm sure he attributed the quote to Shanks.  That would make sense because i think he played under him (?).

Anyway, i think it was a reference to the fact that liverpool had great teams with just a sprinkling of Scots, whereas the Scottish national team showed that fielding eleven of them was a recipe for bland football and humiliation at the hands of the most obscure footballing nations :p

Judging from little anecdotes like this Shankly had quite a wicked sense of humour, and i think the quote fits well with him, although S & G hasn't been aired for about ten years so my memory could be crappy.

Ask 'Saint' - he might even remember!
