To me the question isn't who would have settled for where we are at the beginning of this season Mick, but rather who would have settled for where we are and what we have achieved since Rafa came in 2004.
Many I am sure would gladly of settled for a CL WIN and regular CL football. Myself I expected more, at least in the league, especially with the money we have spent. I don't think the people who would have settled for what we have achieved are wrong, just as I don't believe I am wrong because I expected more at the time, and TBH I have been disappointed that we have never come close nevermind won the league. Certainly if you had asked me back in 2006 what I expected over the next few years I would have expected a lot more than we have achieved.
Which is why I feel this season is so crucial, I think we were given a wonderful chance this season, and while we have not completely blown it we have certainly not taken full advantage of it. My worry is this may be the best chance we have for years, and then what? We are unlikely to be able to compete with the mancs or Chelsea in the transfer market......... a few years go by and Gerrard and Carra retire, no money to replace them, and Torres and the rest of the armada sail back to Spain.
I honestly wouldn't feel half so bad if Rafa hadn't brought his contract up now. It has just crystalised how unsure I am of how well we are progressing and at what speed. I really feel very uneasy about him getting a new contract now instead of in the summer. I remember how I felt when Houllier was given a new contract after we won the League cup, and I feel the same sense of doubt now as I did then.
