Boro are deeply inconsistent, which is one of their more dangerous qualities (if you can call it a quality). They on their day can pose quite a challenge and as Chelsea have noticed can cause major upsets. It's also worth mentioning we have gone four years without winning at the Riverside Stadium. Not a bad record for a team who is 'piss poor'.
Bad Bob wrote:First off, their extreme inconsistency is one of the main reasons why they are p!ss-poor. Sure, they can raise their game on occasion against the big sides but so can a lot of teams. For the most part, they're pedestrian and, given our quality, we should be able to take the game to them, despite our recent road worries. If we can get after them from the off and manage not to concede first for once in a blue moon, we'll be just fine.
As for our recent record at the Riverside, we need to look at it a bit more closely. Last season we absolutely battered them and should have won the game handily. Gerrard could have had a hat-trick by himself but it was not to be. A draw was a fluke result.
The season before we were absolutely decimated by injuries up top, leading to a starting strike force of Garcia and Kewell. We also were in the thick of a Champions League dogfight in the group stages and a team that was going through the teething process under our new manager. We got beaten handily by Boro and deserved to, as we were abject, but that was the only one of our last four encounters where they really did us over.
Before that I don't remember particularly clearly, TBH, but the .tv piece today indicates that they fluked a couple of results despite us being the better side...about par for the tail end of the Houllier era, I'd say.![]()
I'm not saying defeat on Saturday is inconceivable but I still think we have more than enough about us--even struggling and even after the mid-week internationals--to see off Boro.
