It's clear that if Xabi is to go then it's on Rafa's terms. Xabi has 3 years of a contract left an Anfield so, although player power is massive in the game these days, Rafa is very much holding the ace card here.

If Xabi is desperate to go and it means we can pick up 2-3 (still) top class players in the mould of Sneider and Van Der Vaart then I would seriously look at it. OK these guys haven't had a good time of it at Madrid but they've been managed bu sh*te managers and been playing in front of a sh*te defence. Have them managed by Rafa and put them in our team and I would be confident that we'd see the best of them.

Of course the above is only valid IF Xabi wants to leave and Rafa is willing to let him go. I think the latter of the scenarios (i.e. Rafa) will decide what happens. We would still be able to command a v.good fee for Xabi next year when he has 2 years left on his contract AND after a World Cup after which the prices are always massively inflated due to performance the reduced time to tie up deals once the tournament is finished!!

I think Rafa has this situation well and truly under control :)

Yeah it's a good thing he still has 3 years left on his contract. Rafa can use that to our advantage and im sure he intends too. But he himself surley has plans for that money or players coming this way so at the same time he will want to get a deal done as quick as possible should Xabi want to go. If we did keep Xabi here against his wishes would he even be performing at his best?

Not sure about you lot but I wouldnt want anyone here who doesnt want to be.

Plans for what money BAv - he has plans for the current budget and has said he doesnt need to sell to fund the players he wants to arrive .

Im pretty sure Xabi is a model pro and you only have to look at his performances last season after what happened during the summer to see that he would do his job to the highest of his abilities no matter what .

He has said we can buy one more player if no one goes. But who is to say that no one will go? It's all well and good saying we cant listen to the papers but the reality is there is no smoke without fire so probably the only time you will hear it from the horses mouth is when they are announcing we have decided to sell him/them.

He said he only needs to buy two players - he has got one so expect one more to come in - he has said he doesnt need to sell to buy that one player .

Yes there is no smoke without fire but the fire is coming from Madrid Directors and the press is leaping on it ignoring the water that Rafa is putting on those fires .

Masher has stated while its great to be linked to teams like Barce and Madrid and he would prefer Barce he has also stated he loves being at Liverpool yet bloggers and reports conviently leave that bit out because it would ruin a good headline.

Football FanCast guest columnist Thomas Kelly couldn't care less if Mascherano never played for Liverpool again.

Maybe I'm just getting cranky in my old age, but I have just about had my fill of the conduct from the likes of Alonso and Mascherano in recent weeks. The latter in particular riles me greatly and it's clear that the fine that Rafa gave Javier, with regards to speculating about his future has had any impact on him. He can't stop talking about it and I have reached the point where I couldn't care less if he stays or goes.

His latest instalment speaking to Don Balon:

"I am very proud and thankful for the interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid. It's good for me to have these two teams interested in me,"

"Both teams are very important, but at this moment I think that Barcelona is a little bit better and that's why they've won all that they have."

Thanks for letting us know Javier and glad you didn't feel the need to mention as to what an important football club you are currently at, who pay you well and who you are currently under contract with.  Talking about other clubs shows a complete lack of respect to everyone associated at Liverpool football club, especially the manager who was hoping this summer to just put the finishing touches to the squad ahead of next season's challenge.

Unfortunately the speculation puts everyone in an awkward position and suddenly Rafa is left with a dilemma as to what he now does with regards to Javier's future. Does he sit back and hope that neither Barcelona or Real Madrid make a bid, which will obviously tempt the player, or does he actively look to sell him as soon as possible so he can get a suitable replacement in ahead of pre-season. It is the kind of problem that Benitez shouldn't have to face, but that shows player loyalty for you.

Personally I would sell Mascherano, because if he is not committed to the football club then in the long run we are best off without him. This is not the first time he has felt the need to pass comment on other teams and with reports that his agent Walter Tamer has been having meetings with officials at Barca; he obviously feels that his future must lie away from Anfield. It would be a grave shame to lose him, but there is no point in keeping players whose heart is obviously elsewhere.

again i say where is it said in public or actual fact/statement that he has said these things. please anyone inform me of this as it is begining to really feck me off now,if either player has said officially they want to leave, then i blame setanta for going bust cause i have & never will pay my had earnt money to ssn etc & all they stand for. LFC tv is my source of info about the club & up till now nothing has been mentioned about either player leaving us.

fecking paper talk etc they try an ruin me friday night on the ale,but won't suceed .  :lookaround  please tell me i'm right.

at a push i'd sell alonso to nadrid. Gerrard/masch has more pace in the middle than a gerrard alonso combo. Masch is more regimental in staying in his place. Also, we could then purchase the likes of silva, maxi rod and martinez from bilbao. As rafa would say, " it gives us many possibilities".
