Yaya Toure straight swap. Absolute beast of a player, has turned down a new contract at Barcelona and is a better passer of the ball than Mascherano.

Agree with the notion that of the two, I'd be happier seeing Mascherano go (as much as I love the guy). In my opinion Alonso is our best defensive player because of the way he keeps posession of the ball and play the right passes to his team mates which makes it easier for them to keep the ball also combined with the fact he always makes himself availible for a pass to help out his team mates.

If you dont give away the ball going forward you hardly ever need to make last ditch tackles as the team as a unit will be in balance when the opposition attack. When this is the case, your reading of the game is your most essential ability as you will posistion yourself in the right space at the right time and will not need to hurry into zones because you were out of position in the first place.

Alonso is the ultimate player to have in a zonal system as he covers his zone perfectly because of his reading of the game(vision and intelligence).

The defensive game is all about balance and covering zones and if you are able to master this the ability to tackle is almost just an luxury.

As seen in the CL Final Yaya Toure can also fill in at CB if needed - i would be happy with 45mil plus toure but cant see it happening

I love the transfer window:D

This La Liga fantasy league between Barca and Real Madrid might actually benefit us. If they offer £45m for Mascherano (or cash + Yaya Toure) then absolutely bite their hand off. I would like to see Toure come to LFC as I rate the guy highly. Maybe it would suit him as I think Kolo Toure will move to Man City .... Liverpool and Manchester not far apart ... family reunion in the north east ... game on!!

Maybe that would leave us enough to go for Villa??

I would also like to see us go for Cattermole (we were linked with him before) and Mark Noble (said it a few times on here) to bolster the squad.

well for masch situation, there has been report that his missus have trouble adapting to liverpool and went back to argentina.
well unless masch divorce his wife, having a long distance relationship is no proper solution in the long term.
if Barca is kind enough to offer crazy money plus yaya toure, i say we grab it and run.

i guess over the last couple of years after hearing rumour after rumour and inside knowledge that this player and that player is coming and getting hopes only to see them fall flat has made me more realistic and just ignore and dismiss most of the sh.it in the papers - that way if it comes true im shocked surprised and delighted and if it turns out false then i havent lost out . play it safe  :D

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has seemingly confirmed that his Anfield future is in some doubt.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez looks under increasing pressure as the long-term futures of his midfield stars Alonso and Javier Mascherano appear far from certain.

While Mascherano's agents have held discussions with Barcelona, Alonso has intimated he may also be looking for a better deal elsewhere.

Speaking in South Afirca, where he is competing in the Confederations Cup with Spain, Alonso stoked up the speculation surrounding his future.

"Would you be disappointed if you end up having to stay at Liverpool next season?" he was asked.

"I can't answer that question," he replied

It now seems to me that Rafa will sell them and all he has been doing is to hold out till the price is right.

Rafa now has the power to keep them at the club or sell them, it was in his new contract, so it will only be down to rafa if they go, Rafa must have other players in his mind that he feels could do a better job, myself i can not think of many, and the ones i can we could never pay them what they would ask.

I honestly struggle to understand how you draw your conclusions, mate.  I think Rafa's made it very clear that both are crucial to the team and that he intends to hold onto both.  Thus, if--and, I'm sorry, but it's still a very big if--one or both were to leave for Spain this summer it will be because they want to leave.  In that situation Rafa might decide that cashing in on a top player who wants out is the most prudent thing to do but I can't imagine any scenario where he wants to let them go.

If any of them leave it will be downb to feeling not welcome at our club.

for him to say "I can't answer that question," means there is a very good chance that he is about to go, if he was not why did he just say "no i love being at liverpool and i am staying? ????
