You see my point though Joe, in hindsight, knowing what we know now and all that old b0ll0cks, should we have givne the fella practically his debut in a Champions league game? There's a big difference between "but you can't play the same team in every single game" and that particular strand of rotation "Rafa style". Becuase that game came in the middle of our "blip", during which time we were frantically trying to get the ship back on an even keel, the result has had a huge effect on our remaining fixtures (losing in Besiktas didn't help as well obviously). I'll have to check up on Bob's team sheets on the rotation thread to see if there was any "Rafa style" in that game..

EDIT: Just quickly so the R word doesn't take over this thread, the team according to Bob (and he hasn't been wrong so far) was Reina, Finnan, Carra, Hyppia, Riise, Pennant, Gerrard, Masherano, Babel, Kuyt and Voronin.

To be totally honest there's not a lot wrong with that in isolation other than the front two not really hitting it off too well. To be fair to rafa though, it looks like by this stage he had realised that he really could quite do with us getting a result.

People slated Leto after that night but no one ever mentions that everybody was pi$$ poor, and Sisokko was about 10 times worse than Leto was, given the fact it was only his 1st or second game he could do with being cut some slack

just the LM:
Porto (1-1) : Babel
Birmingham (0-0) : Babel
Reading (4-2) (league cup): Leto
Wigan (1-0): Riise

Marseille: (0-1): Leto

don;t remember how Leto played in the league cup, but all the other left sided options were lighting the world alight at the time, the talk was "Babel is not a winger, he is a striker play him there" or something, and as we know Riise's form was left in China on the pre-season tour

Mate he can have all the slack he wants from me. By all accounts it was one of the worst Liverpool performances seen for many a year and Leto may well develop into an excellent player for all I know. Perhaps though he might have been better off not making his first appearance of the season in the Champions league. It was just a bit of daftness in selection whcih caught my eye in somebody else's post, and you're spot on right, the poor performance can't be blamed on a young kid.

EDIT: (after seeing Joe's post) Alright second appearance then, but you get my drift  :D

He had to have thought they would come to defend and Riise was already not really playing well so those combined factors work against putting him  in there, althought in HINDSIGHT, he would have been more steady than Leto and MAYBE would have made less mistakes.

Kewell still wasn't fit

Where the hell was Pennant for this game?!? not even on the bench? was he hurt?

If Pennant was available, then I think he should have gone with Yossi on the left and Gerrard in the middle

Oh :censored: I remember, red card against porto, F_ You Pennant, and I was going to defend you in your thread

Anyway, considering the recent form, picking Leto over Babel is not that big of a deal almost a cointoss really, especially to play at LM

Benayoun on for Kewell if Kewells fitness isn't up to 90mins. I think this is a game in which possession is vital, which is why I have gone for Lucas and not Gerrard in the centre, plus with Kuyt playing we may need Gerrards goals.

Why you need SG goals when Kuyt is playing??
Isn't Torres capable or just not good enough? :D

Yes, let's not make too much out of the fact that Leto played in that match.  Fact was, it was a home game against a team that were, at the time, in the relegation places in France and who'd just sacked their manager.  Fact was, that you take Leto out of that team sheet and the rest of the team looks pretty solid, with many being quite seasoned Champions League warriors.  Most importantly, fact was, that virtually everyone on the pitch was p!ss-poor that day and that includes Gerrard and Torres.  We stood off Marseille, let them pass their way through us and kept handing them the ball right back every time we got possession.  One of our worst performances at Anfield in recent years, it was--one that has seemingly been overshadowed by our subsequent loss to Besiktas (where we played much better, TBH).

as for arsenal losing, so what, we never took any advantage of that did we, we still need them to lose 3 more than us this season

10 goals in his last 25 games, better than anyone other than Torres and Gerrard.

Arsenal have slipped up, probably because they've now caught up some of their away games. Someone pointed out, possibly Wenger, that the mancs now have played two more at home than away, IF we beat the mancs next weekend then the title race could be well and truly on

Not over sure about this one and to honest i would not be to upset if we were knocked out of this years CL as we could then concentrate all our efforts onto the EPL.

Having said that a win would bring confidence for the weekend game.

Do think Raffa will go with a strong team though

Reina
Finnan
Hyypia
JC
Arbeloa
Benny
SG
Masch
Kewell
Torres
Kuyt

Think we might struggle

heart says 2-1

Head telling me 1-1

We wait the game against you = You are going to defend the whole game and this is the only game this year that you guys are looking forward to.

We win you all the time = You have won against us in Mickey Mouse cups. We have missed you in two CL-finals but I guess you guys where up to more important stuff.

We don't have Nasri but we have Valbuena and Niang = We have players that hardly no one knows anything about and then some rejects from other clubs.

In our stadium on fire, we don't let you any chance = You are going to burn your stadium down since you don't stand a chance?

For the record, though, neither Zenden nor Cisse were considered good enough for us....that's why we sold them to you!  :p
