Mark gonzales deal could be back on! - Winger to marry spanish girlfriend.

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby spion » Sat Aug 20, 2005 10:04 am

Mark Gonzales is to marry his long term Spanish partner so he can qualify for a EU pastport in a last ditch move to ressurect his move to Liverpool. Gonzales's girlfriend Nico Vancial is quoted in various Spainish papers as saying that the Albacete winger proposed when she took him out for dinner after his transfer fell through because of work permit regulations. And they only realized the implications when Nico's father brought it up! The pair are to have a orthodox wedding in Albacete next Saturday.

Rafael Benitez says he still wants to sign Chile winger Mark Gonzalez despite him having a work permit turned down and will make another move in January for the player.
Benitez said the club also have the backing of the Chilean government in their efforts to bring the player to England. Liverpool will try to sign Gonzalez again in January but if that fails then he can join the club before the start of the 2006/07 season as he is eligible for a Spanish passport in 2006.

Benitez said: "We have to wait until at least January before we can do anything else, but next year he'll have a European passport anyway. His grandmother is from Spain and he has a German grandfather. So he must go through all this for the sake of one year.

"It's an unbelievable decision we must wait so long. I believe the Chilean government has taken a big interest in the case. They sold 1,000 Liverpool shirts when we signed Gonzalez. No-one understands what's going on.

"I find it stupid he can't join us. We have made a lot of effort to send our scouts to watch him, we've received good reports from his previous managers, we've interviewed his former team-mates to get their view on him and my chief scout has watched him regularly since he was a youngster in Chile.

"We feel as European Champions, we have found a player who is good enough for us and who has a big future. Now someone tells us we can't sign him."

The way I see it, he'll be dual nationality by next summer anyway when he gets his EU passport.  Let's just wait till then.  He's only 20 and still injured for a few months anyway.  It may not be a bad thing for him to stay at Albacete for one more season so he can completely rehabilitate after what was quite a serious injury.  That means he can hit the ground running when he joins us next summer, rather than playing catch-up with the other LFC players fitness-wise.

My only worry is that someone else could hijack the deal, but the guy genuinely sounds like he wants to play for LFC and Rafa.  I'm sure he'll be a LFC player  by this time next year at the latest  :)

If he'd been allowed to join when we "signed" him, he could have settled in to the English way of life without having to bed into the team aswell. It'd have been much better for us long-term.
Not to mention the fact that if he was at LFC he would get better medical care for his injury.
