LUTON TOWN vs LIVERPOOL: 06/01/08 - FA Cup 3rd Rnd - Build up and Match

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

We where lucky to draw with Luton today which shows how bad things are right now.

Their passion for the game was evident and we laboured against players that are not even being paid a salary. Quite frankly its shameful.

To not compete is the worst you can be as a player and we had a team full today.

If we are considering spending £17m on Mascherano we want our heads testing. This is a player that cannot turn a game on his own, dominate midfield or score a goal so what the hell is going on with that price. Its crazy money for a workhorse midfield player and thats all he is despite the hype that surrounds him. Hopefully the owners will not allow the purchase.

i would spend the 17 million on a top class winger or support striker instead

I'd say he's not worth it, had the scum not paid such astronomically dumb fees for Hargreaves and Carrick.

In that climate, Mascher is worth about £80m. :D

If Alonso was worth a £15 to 20million new contract, I am pretty sure Mascherano is worth £17million. £9million Transfer plus £8million contract. Sounds a bargain to me.

Surely the £17m is the fee his owners want?

That would mean a total outlay of £25m at least.

No mate, Rafa has said that its £17million including wages, after they initially wanted £17million plus wages.

When?

I can't find the article with the breakdown of Transfer and wages, I will have a look for it later mate.

Argentine Mascherano is currently entering his eleven month of a loan deal at Liverpool and his consistent performances in midfield have quickly gained him an army of admires on Merseyside.

Benitez is reported to be keen on making the ball-winner a permanent squad member in January rather than wait till the summer.

To this end, it is rumoured that the Spaniard has made a major breakthrough in his negotiations with MSI, the company that own Mascherano’s playing rights.

MSI, who also control Carlos Tevez's involvement with Manchester United, initially wanted a reported £17 million fee for the Argentinean international.

However, it is believed Liverpool have agreed for that £17 million fee to include the player’s wages over a five-year spell – beating off interest from Barcelona.

Clearly the confirmation of the player’s stay would please his team-mates, as goalkeeper Jose Reina stated: “It is quite important because Mascherano has been one of our best players so far.

Best I can do for now

I know it's off topic, but I'm assuming that the £17m fee is a loan fee that includes his wages, and does not secure Mascherano's 'economic rights' outright?

If the deal being mooted is a deal that does secure the player outright - no third party ownership strings attached, then we'd be stupid not to press ahead with the deal.

On another note, I thought we were appalling today, but we have the replay thankfully.

I have no real idea, but I would think it would have to include economic rights etc. We wouldn't allow Owen and Gerrard their own image rights years ago.

Presumably we would be able to sell him as any other player, not just "hand him back after 5 years".

Mascherano joined Liverpool in an unusual lease arrangement in January, with the Merseyside club paying Joorabchian’s company, Media Sports Investment (MSI), a loan fee to secure the player’s services until the end of this season. Under the terms of that agreement, Liverpool can sign a long-term deal with Mascherano before June 30 next year by paying MSI £17 million and assuming control of his economic rights as well as his playing registration, but planned changes to Fifa’s regulations on third-party ownership mean that the club will wait before deciding to pay that sum.

TIMES LINK

Whether the new deal would be similar is obviously still open to question. This is an old article but best I could find.

Played rubbish today, no spirit / heart, Luton were the opposite.

Wasnt Rafas fault it was anyone who had anything to do with the team today (players, coaches, manager etc)

I wont say much more or i'll get eaten alive more than likely, very dissapointed

As far as im concerned lad youve laid the facts down well thats why i cant understand everyone callin for Rafas head again the team played :censored: they looked absolutly terrified every time one of them got the ball it was get rid of as soon as . no fluency going from defence to attack . I will admit like some have been sayin on here Xabi had a bad game and im chokin sayin that. But i expected it to be a hard game i said at the beginning of the thread its the fa cup and the smaller teams always seem to shine.

Look on the bright side we didnt lose and i fully expect it to be a completly different match at Anfield

I have given up on Dirk, I know I have him in my sig and I will keep him there until he leaves, but only because I think he's a great bloke and I think he really tries his best every game. The sad fact is his best is not good enough.
