Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

We are already 1-0 up from the first leg thanks to Voronin’s goal. I don’t think that Toulouse are as good as the press and some fans have made out.

Even though we have a couple of key injuries we should still be able to overcome them with a relative degree of comfort and the fact that we have a 3 day gap before we face Derby means “rotation” can be kept to a minimum.

These players are not available or likely not to be available:

Sami Hyypia
Harry Kewell
Steven Gerrard
Fabio Aurelio
Jamie Carragher

That probably means that Rafa will select a staring 11 and subs bench from the following players:

Steve Finnan
Daniel Agger
John Arne Riise
Fernando Torres
Andriy Voronin
Yossi Benayoun
Xabi Alonso
Peter Crouch
Jermaine Pennant
Alvaro Arbeloa
Dirk Kuyt
Ryan Babel
Javier Mascherano
Momo Sissoko
Pepe Reina
Charles Itandje
Lucas Levia
Sebastian Leto
Jack Hobbs

I would select the following 11 and subs bench leaving Babel out all together for this one:

                       Reina

Finnan      Arbeloa     Agger    Riise

Pennant    Sissoko  Mascherano Benayoun

                 Kuyt     Crouch

Fernando Torres
Andriy Voronin
Sebastian Leto
Lucas Levia
Xabi Alonso
Jack Hobbs
Charles Itandje

Considering the injuries the defence picks itself. I am one of Pennant’s biggest critics but he has started the season well and I would like him to continue that momentum. With Gerrard out it is a good chance for Sissoko to get some games, Mascherano will provide a good foil for him. Crouch and Kuyt come in for Torres and Voronin and Leto and Levia may be able to get some minutes coming off the bench.

I dont think you will far off with that team, looks solid, and if not the bench is there to be used.

I wonder if Rafa might play around with his defence a bit, bearing in mind the injuries. There's certainly a case for playing 3 at the back in the next couple of games, which would then leave us more flexibility on the bench. We've got so much quality going forward that even if we concede, I can see us scoring 2, 3 or 4 against Toulouse and Derby.

Example:

                               Reina

              Finnan        Agger        Arbeloa/
                                                 Riise

Pennant   Sissoko     Benayoun/      Mascherano   Riise/
                               Alonso                             Babel

                   Crouch             Voronin

As Ivor said in the Sunderland thread, this really is a crucial match for Crouch.  I presume he will start given his absence from the squad that traveled to Sunderland.  If so, he must have a blinder to force himself back into contention for league games.  With Torres nailed on to start most games, Kuyt offering his usual lung-bursting industry and some promising link play with Torres, and with Voronin showing that he knows where the goal is, Crouch is very much in danger of slipping out of the reckoning in our most important competition.

The fantastic thing about this season is that Rafa could feasibly put out any number of configurations in midfield and on the wings, and - at the moment - I'd probably be happy with any of them. Before yesterday's injuries, it was the same at the back too. Last few seasons, you'd have Zenden, Josemi, Nunez, Gonzalez or Cisse in the team that you just felt like was being rotated in for the hell of it, even though they simply weren't good enough.

It really is a good time to be a Red at the minute. Two wins this week, and we can reflect on the best August I can remember in a long, long time.

I really think that Toulouse will kick out Liverpool from the CL
We come to anfield with only one goal : to have fun... without any pressure (comparing to the 1st leg)... that's why the team is going to win maybe 2-0 or more  ....
Remember, your players are very strong but they are humans like our players.... everything is possible !!! :p
