At least we're not the only ones facing an injury crisis ahead of the match tomorrow.  Here's Soccernet's overview of Portsmouth's injury woes:

"Pompey are without two full-backs. Glen Johnson has a thigh injury and Dejan Stefanovic had an ankle operation yesterday.

Sean Davis (groin) and Matt Taylor (back) are major doubts along with striker Lomana LuaLua (ankle).

Benjani Mwaruwari will need a pain-killing injection in his knee to join Kanu up front."

Perhaps Pennant can get after their makeshift LB tomorrow and take the pressure off the centre of the park.  Nice to hear that Davis and Taylor are doubtful...they've both got quality to offer.

Because we are at home there is that advantage. We will win the game in my eyes, there are little games where we do loose at home. It's a great chance to get up the table and put pressure on the other teams still up there. This is the team i think will be played for the game : -

            Reina
Finnan    JC     Agger        Riise
Pennant  Gerrard  Zenden  Garcia
        Crouch   Kuyt

Mixed fortunes for LFC again... Bad luck with so many injuries but rather better fortune that we're playing Pompey (who have their own injury problems) at Home rather than anybody else Away. It could certainly be worse...

What about:

                   Reina

Finnan          Hyypia              Riise

               Carra  Agger

Pennant                           Garcia
                    Gerrard

               Fowler     Kuyt

Carra and Agger both shielding Sami could alternate helping out the defence with the other filling the hole in the centre as Stevie bombs forward.  It also allows cover if either Finnan or Riise get the opportunity to overlap.  We know JC can play DM but I get the feeling that Agger would actually be better creatively.  Using both in front of Sami would also provide protection for Garcia and Pennant and Agger would be a good starting point going forward.

If Rafa rates any of the reserves maybe Guthrie will get his chance in a 4-4-2 with a midfield of Pennant, Gerrard, Guthrie and Garcia? I think he should certainly be on the bench...

The more I think about this, the more I see that Rafa really has built 'possibilities' into the squad.

                   Reina

Finnan    Carra   Hyypia   Agger

Pennant        Gerrard            Riise

                     Kuyt
           Fowler         Garcia

I reckon a solid back four with Riise and Gerrard adding security in the centre should be more than enough to make things difficult for Kanu, Oneill and Davies who are Pompey's biggest threats IMHO.  With their depleted back line, Kuyt playing in the hole plus the trickery of Garcia and the experience of Fowler should also (on paper) make plenty of work for our friend Calamity.  The three pronged attack form Pennant on the right, Kuyt/Gerrard in the middle and Garcia pushing out left allows us to vary the source of our attacks and astop us from becoming predicatble ie everything through Stevie G.

I'll go for a surprisingly comfortable 2-0.

                Kuyt    Crouch/Fowler

That's my guess too, except I would put Agger in DM. Reason: in case he slips up, at least there's still Carra and Hyppia to sweep things up. Also, he seems a more creative (read: can get goals) option than Carra.

If we win tonight the table will look alot better. We should be able to overtake the bitters, pompey and Reading tonight. Also Arsenal and Villa are not garaunteed anything out of they're games.
