No team has ever NOT won the premier league by loosing 2 games all season, so If that were to happen to us this year it would prove us the most unluckiest runners-up of the title ever!!

i said that 5 days ago (the bit in bold). you stole my comments to bump yer thread up   :D

for the first time ever im a tinnnny bit worried about playing newcastle...

our defence is looking really really poor and they are playing 3 strikers up front.

Hopefully rafa will sort them out.

You jus kno the way the seasons goin its gonna be a 4-3 dontcha ??? Jeez, we'll have Collymore and Fowler on temporary contracts by next weekend. Not sure I'd enjoy it, but so long as we win I'll appily take it. I see it now, two from Torres early on, an own goal, (Arby methinx) puts em back on track and a resurgent Owen makes it 2-3 with 10 to go...... enter stage right Deadly Dirk.....

God, there'll be no-one in a fit state to watch us by the end of the bloody season at this rate. :D
Stu Averill, a wannabe Scouse/Scot. I remember the good times & have faith in them comin back

Beside the Hillsborough Flame, I heard a Koppite mournin, "Why so many taken on that day?" Justice has never been done. But their memory we'll carry on. There'll be Glory Round The Fields Of Anfield Road

Well we would be the first team to lose exactly two games in the Premiership, it would be the fewest defeats not to win the Premiership - four sides have lost just three games and not won the Premiership so it would be unique but not that "unlucky" given how many we've drawn. And we could still lose a third game - or more.

Fewest Premiership Defeats In A Season

0 defeats - Arsenal 03/04 (1st) : P38 W26 D12 L0 PTS 90
1 defeat - Chelsea 04/05 (1st) : P38 W29 D8 L1 PTS 95
3 defeats - Man Utd 99/00 (1st) : P38 W28 D7 L3 PTS 91
3 defeats - Arsenal 01/02 (1st) : P38 W26 D9 L3 PTS 87
3 defeats - Chelsea 07/08 (2nd) : P38 W25 D10 L3 PTS 85
3 defeats - Chelsea 06/07 (2nd) : P38 W24 D11 L3 PTS 83
3 defeats - Arsenal 07/08 (3rd) : P38 W24 D11 L3 PTS 83
3 defeats - Man Utd 98/99 (1st) : P38 W22 D13 L3 PTS 79
3 defeats - Chelsea 98/99 (3rd) : P38 W20 D15 L3 PTS 75

Only SIX times ever has a team lost two or fewer games in the top flight

Fewest Top Flight Defeats In A Season

0 defeats - Arsenal 2003/04 (1st) : P38 W26 D12 L0 PTS 90
0 defeats - Preston NE 1888/89 (1st) : P22 W18 D4 L0 PTS 40
1 defeat - Chelsea 2004/05 (1st) : P38 W29 D8 L1 PTS 95
1 defeat - Arsenal 1990/91 (1st) : P38 W24 D13 L1 PTS 83
2 defeats - Liverpool 1987/88 (1st) : P40 W26 D12 L2 PTS 90
2 defeats - Leeds Utd 1968/69 (1st) : P42 W27 D13 L2 PTS 67

I'd rather have the league title than be in the top six of a table of records.

The barcodes don't look like a side that can get out of the mess they're in, but that's just the kind of complacent thinking we need to avoid. They lose tomorrow and they will be desperate to pick up points against us. Let's face it, if they lose their next two games they'll be on 30 points still with three games to go and look all but down. They haven't won since beating WBA on 07/02/09 at the Hawthorns, also the last time they scored more than one in a match. They've netted just four goals in their last eight games, surely if Owen's fit then he can't continue his goalless streak and that habit players can have of scoring against old clubs still lurks.

DrPepe wrote:4th to 1st is a big big difficult jump for a team without title challenge experience

Only two sides have finished as low as 3rd in the Premiership and then won the title the following season - very experienced Man Utd did it in 02/03, Arsenal did it in 97/98. No Premiership side has finished lower than 3rd in the previous season and gone on to win the Premiership, the last team to finish 4th and win the league the next season was Leeds Utd.

Last Team To..........

.......Finish 2nd and win the league next season : Man Utd 06/07
.......Finish 3rd and win the league next season : Man Utd 02/03
.......Finish 4th and win the league next season : Leeds Utd 91/92
.......Finish 5th and win the league next season : LIVERPOOL 80/81
.......Finish 6th and win the league next season : Arsenal 88/89
.......Finish 7th and win the league next season : Aston Villa 80/81
.......get promoted and win the league next season : Notts Forest 77/78

No team has ever won the league more than three times in a row, so if we finish runners-up then they'd have to break a 100+ year record to win it next season and we wouldn't have to break a Premiership record (of noone winning it from lower than 3rd the previous season)

Shearer and Ian Dowie were at the Hull game. We shouldn't take this game for granted but this should be a relativley easy win.

Talking about line-ups...I would love to see Hypia come in and steady the ship. We're all over the shop  lately, making basic errors, poor positioning, getting caught in posession, neglecting duties and general panic and naivety resulting in too many goeals conceded. It may not help or perhaps Sami isnt fit at the moment. But if he is, send him in to calm Jmie down. Hes been losing the head lately and its affecting 'squirtel' and 'danish daniel' badly.

I think we need sami...

Feel for newcastle and alan would like them to stay in the premiership. Got a few relatives up a the tyne and they are demoralised at the moment. Anyhow they could sort themselves out after this match. Feck them we need the 3 points... :D
Should be a cagey encounter but cant see anymore less than a win for us. 3-0 ...

Just keep winning red men, its all we can do. Finish with a flourish even if the title may just be out of our grasp. Bring Sami in, Stevie should be fit and the way Yossi Kuyt and Nando like up we shouldnt have too many problems. 3-0 to us, Nando, 2 for Stevie, he loves scoring against the toon.

Along with Blackburn, they are the worst team I've seen us play this season. We should have put 15 past them at St James' Park.

4-0.

We've been scoring goals recently, they haven't. We've scored 23 goals in our last eight league games to their four goals.

Our concern has to be defensive, eight goals conceded in eight games although half were in one game and down to individual errors. We have won six of the last seven, but half of the games we've dropped points in recently have been at home

Last six games with points dropped

Liverpool 4-4 Arsenal
Middlesboro 2-0 Liverpool
Liverpool 1-1 Man City
Wigan 1-1 Liverpool
Liverpool 1-1 Everton
Stoke 0-0 Liverpool

Newcastle aren't much worse than Boro if at all, and most of those dropped points listed shouldn't have been dropped - all dropped in 2009. Defeat is unthinkable, another home draw equally so. We drop way too many points against sides that end up relegated, seven dropped against Reading and Birmingham last season, four against Sheff Utd and Charlton the season before................
