And why didn't we see Gonzalez earlier? Zenden has not not changed my opinion that he is strictly ordinary!

Only Sissoko and Stevie Shined for me tonight. Sissoko Man of the Match.

GOnzalez's strike has made us look better that it could have been. and we looked slow. exactly what i expected in this stage of season.

Feckinell lad you sound happy, what do yer expect that Ballamy scored a hatrick and Pennant fed all the goals.
First game at Anfield for the both of them and a CL qualifier, jesus some people are never pleased.
Ive got one issue with Raffa, and only one, and he wasnt the cause tonight.
We should not have sold Didi Hamann I think that one will come back and bite us, but as me mum says, weve got to move on girl, we have I know, but he is better than Zenden and he should not have  left.
Zenden does nothing for me, but he is a Rafa buy, and he knows he has made mistakes with, Josemi, Morientes, pellegrino :sniffle and he obviously wants him to work out.
As much as he frustrates us maybe when he is back to fitness we will reap rewards.
But Ive never liked him as a player, even though he was Boro's best player, Maybe Rafa see's something in him that we dont.
Feckin scary next season without Didi though him over Zenden anyday.

Im worried with that system.  I feel it hurts Gerrards game.  Bellamy is running into the channels when their is nobody else up beside him. Would prefer 2 up front.  Is this season a season too far for Hyppia?

Zenden is nowhere near good enough.  He had 1 decent season at Boro but anyone who saw him at Chelsea or Barcelona when he played wide left knows his average.

Good to see 2 new boys scoring for us :)

We were really bad in the first half, the Maccabi player took their goal well though from where i was sitting
Will need to watch the game, taped on sky+ though before i can comment properly

I don't disagree that Hamann's better than Zenden, Ciggy, but I don't think it was a matter of Rafa choosing Bolo over Didi out of some sense of loyalty to "his" buys.

I think, as I've said in other threads, that Rafa approached Didi and was straight with him.  The gaffer probably said something like:"look, Kaiser, Momo was immense for us last season and will be a big part of my plans again this season.  And, with Stevie and Xabi also playing plenty in the centre, you're not going to get many cracks at the whip, I'm afraid.  Now, I'd love for you to stay and be part of this title challenge this season but I can understand if you aren't happy sitting on the bench at this stage of your career and would like to look for first-team football elsewhere."

Didi, great professional though he is, probably felt that he only has a few more seasons in him and he wanted to be playing--even if it was at a club some ways below Liverpool.  I don't blame Rafa for being straight-up with him and giving him the option and I don't blame Didi for leaving.

As for Zenden, he'll be like Smicer.  Around for the foreseeable to provide cover for first-teamers, due to his versatility and experience, but will spend the majority of his time on the bench.  If we're lucky, he'll come up trumps at a key moment, like Vladi did, and we'll remember him fondly when he moves on in a season or two.  Otherwise, I suspect we'll largely forget he's in the squad when all the regulars are fit and playing week in, week out.

amazin debut performances easpecially from pennant. the rest of the team dont seem match fit yet but that will soon be sorted. I would hate to choose a team out of that squad soo many good top class players its hard to leave any one out. garcia has improved ALOT his skill and he gets his head up and  looks for a pass now and sissoko is phoenominal this club is most certaily heading in the righ direction .

My views out of 10 on the side tonigh

Reina 7-- was largely untested and you can't blame him for the goal
Finnan 7-- was good going forward but got aught a little at the back. Good performance though
Carra 7-- not his best but was solid
Hyypia 7-- only got caught really on the goal but like Carra was solid
Riise 4-- worse game he has ever played for us
Pennant 9-- man of the match in my eyes. Brilliant down the right and some good crosses to
Alonso 8-- brilliant passing as usual and never looked phased
Sissoko 8-- played very well but still sits a little to deep.
Zenden 7-- gave the ball away a few times but played resonably well
Gerrard 7-- didn't grab the game by the bak of the neck like he usually does
Bellamy 8-- good movement and capped it off with a well taken goal
Garcia 8-- some good little runs and made spae for us. Well done Luis
Crouch 8-- when he came on we clearly improved. Would like to see him and Bellamy together though
Gonzalez 8-- the goal was vital but didn't have enough time to do a lot.

In the end a good result. On the positive side, Jermaine Pennant man of the match easily, Momo had a good game too.

Biggest disappointment was Alonso who looked about 2 weeks behind everyone else.

Let remember though that this was our first competitive match and we pulled ourselves through it.

Bring on Chelsea

I thought Alonso was one of our better players especially in the first half with his passing to Pennant.

Good result? Yes. We have a win, not a convincing 1 but a win nontheless.

I think the player who looked 2 weeks behind everyone else was Riise. More often than not he was getting caught and they were having the time of their life down our left.

Bring on Chelsea? I agree with that. The charity shield is just another warm up match really but i want to win more than ever this time round because it is against those southern bast.ards

Hello people. 1st post ever.

Regarding tonights game I think it was embarrasing. We should never of struggled against this side. They may have some good scalps in their past but we shouldn't of had to wait till the last minute to win the game.

I'm not saying this because he scored but Mark Gonzalez should of started. He is better than Zenden and with him, Pennant, Bellamy and Stevie Gerrard running at any defence you would fancy our chances. 4 players all with good pace and the ability to assist or score.

If we play like that in the league we are not going to win the league. May be our first game back competetively but Arsenal didn't seem to struggle and that was without Henry and they were away. So we need to pull our socks up and Rafa needs to play Crouch and Bellamy together if that is his first choice forward line.

Oh and if anyone can answer I would be very happy. How do you get your own avatars and those long signature things.

Haven't watched the game yet. But, from the comment, I see we underperformed. But I think it's still a good win especially after ending the pre-season friendlies uncomfortably. Also, it's good to see the new signings score the goal, even in the 4-5-1 formation.
