Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Cheers for the links. :nod  Very nice goal from Ngog.  Nice to see some good, direct running and a willingness to go for goal.  Hopefully this kid will be one of those hidden gems for us.  The kind who cause barely a raised eyebrow when they sign but, come May, their name's being sung from the terraces most weeks.

Does anyone know what kind of formation we used in the first half?

Just watched the game properly on LFC tv .
I Was impressed with some of our passing and movement today , we looked alot sharper . Torres keane and Gerrard linked up well a few times , thought yossi had a good game . Once again i was impressed with our youngsters ,all looked good and didn't look out of place. Dossena worries me a little ,his defending at the moment is poor ,but no worries about him bombing forward . Xabi looked class and hopefully this will be the start of him regaining form.

Anyway i have to say that Rangers are a p!ss poor side and i wouldfn't be suprised to see them knocked out by Kaunas. They are a trully awful team .

were they playing their best players?

Do they still have players injured?

We took a shi.t on their pitch and then they young lads made them wipe our :censored: with their blue kit.

really pleased with Yossi's determination and work ethic.

Pennant was poor, and I normally stick up for him.

I know we were up by 4 but in the last 15 everybody thought they should shoot from 30 yards out instead of looking to provide for Nemeth which did not make me happy.

really surprised by the damage that Plessis was able to cause with his shot.

I feel like Kuyt too often slowed things up when both Keane and Torres were making dangerous runs, and instead of forcing the issue and making their defense answer questions, he would pass it back or hold it up, which more gave them a chance to regroup defensively than for us to get more people into attack.

really?

80% of the time he was looking very dangerous and making space for Torres or was just a little off in the weight on his through balls.

He certainly frustrated me a few times, but it is pre-season and his 2nd run out with the team, and it was mainly due to having such high expectations.

Well I haven't seen any of it other than the Youtube clips, but I was encouraged by the line up. There does appear to me to be emerging from the fog, almost indistinguishable to the untrained eye but definately there nontheless, an emergence of a preferred eleven. Hopefully in the next game the definition will become slightly clearer, the blurred edges of "options" and "possibilities" fading into the background as the focus is hieghtened another notch.

The challenge has to be that byn the time we play Standard Liege away in the Champions League, we are almost there in terms of fielding a first team. We need to go there and put the tie to bed, and then go to Sunderland and comfortably pick up the three points with our best team. When we're 2-0 up against the Belgians, and 2-0 up against Keanes lot, we can do a bit of resting for the last 20 minutes or so then.

The parachute into the season proper is descending now. The ground is fast approaching and we need to meet it with our Reeboks on, already tied up and ready to hit it running. I am encouraged by what I've seen in terms of selection so far, we are moving in the right direction.

don't forget that 3 very important "options" are at the olympics and we may still yet add Barry. That could feck everythign up. Plus today was the first day of Skrtel and Carra where it had been ALL carra and agger before.

Joe I've absolutely no doubt the merry go round hasn't quite ran its course yet. Equally, I'm pretty sure that Barry will sign eventually and nail down a starting slot, and that the Olympics will provide a stimulus and an excuse for some styling.

I do though get the feeling that at least this time around we have a purpose, we are actually trying to have a look and establish what is going to be our first team which is a new development. Now I know various detectives, chief constables and rapid response unit members will instantly be reaching for the batons at that comment "well FFS what do you think he does normally, just have a laugh you d!ckhead?". The reality though in my opinion is that the pre-season games have been used previously for purely a means of getting everyone fit. That way we can go into the first few games with numerous "options" and "possibilities" which provide umpteen permutations with which we can baffle whichever opposition who are unfortunate enough to line up against us.

In reality of course in the four seasons of Rafa's tenure so far, we've had to a lesser or greater extent ditch the idea mid way into the season as our inconsistency of selection has been mirrored by our league form. Then as the selections have become more consistent, so have the performances and by and large we have managed to get it together towards the end of the campaign, only the once did we give Everton too big a start and actually not manage to get in the first four.

Well this time, as you say Agger and Carragher have bene the pairing by and large in the friendlies. Today we had a look at Skyrtel, nothing wrong with that. Did he do enough to force his way in? Feck knows as I didn't see it, but at least there's something to force his way into as oppoosed to a group, a club, a bunch of players who are going to take it in turns to get a game. I'm convinced it's going to be different this season Jo, and until Rafa convinces me differently I'm sticking to it.
