LIVERPOOL VS CHELSEA - 7.45 wed 8th april 2009

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

In truth,

to be honest,

I felt a lot worse after the Wigan away game

i thought, scoring early made our tempo slow down, instinctively,

which played right into chelski's hands, all our best play comes from our high tempo style.

Mashcerano was badly missed

Our left side was poor

Essien is a v.good player

an early goal in the second leg and it will deffo be game on.

Sometimes you just have to hold up your hands and admit we were beaten by the far better team on the night after a bright start.

This was quite posssibly the first time we have played them in the CL where we were marginal favourites but on the night Chelsea were immense and even their fringe players (Malouda, Kalou etc  ...) had very good games but in Michael Essien they possessed the best player on the pitch by a mile. He nullified Gerrard, hardly missed a pass all night and gave as good a performance as I've seen from an away team player at Anfield for a long long time.

And all the time whilst Chelsea were playing at the top of their game many of our lesser players were off theirs. Arbeloa, Riera, Lucas (again), Dossena, Babel and Skirtel were all found wanting at this highest level.

It's a big ask to overturn such a deficit and I'm not sure we can do it especially if Chelsea play anywhere near the level they played at tonight

???

Essien is very good at what he does, as he showed tonight but even so its seemed a lot of players just didnt have the pace to keep up with chelsea. As much as the fitness of the united players is catching up with them, it would appear the same is happening to us. Who knows how much that game against fulham took it out of the players? Its a tricky one for rafa now against blackburn. Does he play his first team or rotate for the return against chelsea?

Blackburn are scrapping for every pt they can get so don't expect them to be easy at all on Saturday.........

Early K.O. as well and like you said a few players didn't appear to have the legs tonight.

I don't think Benitez will struggle tactically on Saturday but can you imagine the uproar if he "rests" a few key players and we don't win !  :Oo:

"Possibilities" is a word Benitez loves to use but I suggest he thinks on another word "probability" and picks a team that wins Saturday and puts some pressure on the Mancs cos the CL is gone .............IMHO

I also think the priority is the league. Get a respectable result against chelsea but put in more effort against blackburn. As a sidenote, didnt rafa himself mention that fergie will be supporting liverpool tonight as he wants us to tire ourselves out? hmmm... :D

  just thought I'd glance at the shedend to see what they're saying, this is priceless....

they would sacrifice a CL win in exchange for us not winning the PL

thats just cheered me up a little
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing

lets just get over it. on the night they were better than us and that's that. we're as good as out of the CL so we'll have the league instead. yeah, it hurts a bit because its chelsea but fuck it, it was a big shout trying to win both this season.

I was thinking that too. The interest payments are probably made up of money recieved from league finish position and a good run in Europe. However we will probably finish higher than 4th this year which will make up for it so might not even make a difference.

I was not happy to see Benitez earns another new contract, I am quite sure those American owners have made a big mistake. However, those owners do not care or give a :censored: on how LFC does or achieve, apart from securing big money out of the club, when they will eventually sell the club with a manager with long contract, it is an attractive selling offer.

I just do not understand why Benitez always selects weaker players in his negative first team, ahead of some good players, where he keeps them to warm up the bench seats, like Hyypia, should be instead of the useless and clumsy Skrtel, who was at fault for two goals, and Insur should be ahead of Aurelio, mind you, I know Benitez is a lousy manager, but I thought, probably one day will come out of his negative shell, but this will never happen.
Another disappointed season, but somehow is expected under the genius Benitez!!!!!

Hedgehog and the other Manc whats his face are history - and so are you. You bring NOTHING to this site. Absolutely f*ck all.

Pains me to admit it but yeah maybe it's time to just concentrate on strong finish in the league and be prepared if utd slip up.

I hope some of the lesser players are replaced in the Summer. Tonight was a bitter pill for me to swallow. I just hope the team bounces back on the weekend. It must be hard to motivate your team after that kin of match, especially as we have been playing so well.

the defence was a complete shambles all night,Skretl and Aurelio were especially poor and we missed Mascherano badly in the battle for midfield control, Alonso wasnt helped by Lucas all game, and Essien really bossed the pitch. Were almost certainly out of the competition now, so lets use the extra days of rest to our advantage in the league, and keep putting the pressure on the mancs who look like there crumbling.

We have never been in this sort of postion going in to the second leg before (in the last 4 or so seasons anyways) so it will be interesting how we approach the game. Would be amazing to go theres and actually win the tie. One still dares to dream.
