Well obviously it's a terrible result for the club and not surprisingly things got a wee bit out of hand on this thread. Fortunately it all seems to have clamed down a bit now, most of the WUM's have moved on so perhaps we can return to the debate about the match and inevitably the future of the mananger.
I haven't seen the game, (that'll be the bit that gets quoted then) but the thing which sticks out for me is the selection. Given we had got into the fifth round of the competition with victories over Luton and then a non-league team, and then we had drawn Barnsley at Home you could be forgiven we were in with a squeek of winning the thing. Maybe it's just me being over-optimistic but I really thought our name might be on it. Given that, why didn't the goalkeeper and the captain play?
Now I know that we have an important game on Tuesday, and I know that people will correctly point out that the team which took the field ought to have been good enough to win, but why rest players at this juncture? Does Reina need a rest, is he really that tired? Is Gerrard so dead on his feet that we couldn't risk him for the first hour rather than the last quarter of an hour?
I just got the feeling that the performance at Chelsea was the best in quite a while. Wouldn't it have been nice to go into the Barnsly game with as near to an unchanged team as possible, to build some confidence and momentum for the European game? I would be saying the same thing had we won the Barnsley game 2-0, but now we have lost the game and one of our two chances of a trophy, the question seems even more pertinent.
Defeat on Tuesday would leave us with the freshest squad of players in the history of the Premiership who aren't actually competing for a trophy. Champions League success wouldn't make any difference to me in terms of who should be manager next season. Apologies for being repetitive, but it's time for a change.
