Liverpool vs arsenal - Carling cup qtr final

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Last 4 beckons for the winner of this tie. Arsenal, though not in the best of health, will surely provide a stern test. It'll be interesting to see if Rafa sticks with the big guns or drafts in some younger members of the squad for this game. You could argue this is as good a time as any to face the London club...though nothing should be taken for granted. they have an abundance of excellent athletic, and able young hopefuls, most of whom are established first-teamers already.  Come on Reds - two steps away from Cardiff! YNWA.

I think Rafa will rest a few players tomorrow

                             Dudek

  Peltier         Carra        Agger   Aurelio

Pennant      Alonso        Guthrie     Gonzales

                  Crouch        Fowler

2-0 to Liverpool but Arsenal have some exceptional young players so I dont expect an easy ride.

I don't know if he will go so far as to have quite a number of youth players for this tie, as you suggest Saint, but I totally agree with Pennant, Gonzo, Dudek, Fowler and Crutch playing. I'm not sure how a proposed Hyypia/Agger combo will be if Carra were to rest up, I think he deserves it. Aurelio does need 90 minutes to get back on track and start to compete for a starting place. Is Paletta injured?

All in all, nothing to lose in a mickey mouse cup. Good period to get some game time for the injury prone. I feel ARSEne will field a full strength team, they'll aim to win this, its their only chance of some silverware this season, lol :p

from lfc.tv:

BENITEZ TO FIELD STRONG SIDE AGAINST ARSENAL
Steve Hunter 18 December 2006
Rafael Benitez will select a strong side to take on Arsenal when the Gunners come to Anfield in the quarter-final of the Carling Cup on Tuesday night.
So far in the competition Benitez has fielded a team of youth and experience but the Liverpool manager will call on his big guns for this tie as he admitted Arsenal represent a tough test for his team.

"We know Arsenal are a very good team who play good football and it will be a tough game for sure but we are playing well and I have confidence," Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"Maybe we can use some young players in the squad but I will be selecting an experienced team because they are a good team with good players and we need to be careful.

"I remember when we beat them 2-1 at Anfield when Neil Mellor scored the winning goal and we played very well and at a high tempo. I think this could be a similar game and I would like to see us play at the same level as we did that day."
----------------------------------------------------

Sounds like rafa is going for the big guns tomorrow. After reading this i would expect no more than 2 or 3 players from our first choice 11 to be rested.

i can see him resting carra stevie and kuyt. fowler should play.his goal to game ratio is the best in the squad. What other chance will we get to give the likes of guthrie and peltier more valuable experience against one of the big guns.this competition is the least important and nobody gives the winner any praise

Stay true to the fringe and reserve players but make sure there is balance:

                      Dudek

Peltier      Paletta      Agger      Aurelio

Pennant   Guthrie      Alonso     Gonzalez

              Crouch       Fowler

Subs

El Zhar
Anderson
Gerrard
Carragher
Martin

i'd go with that.

Pennant and Gonzalez need the matches (to find form) and it would be great if Paletta and Peltier could get the experience also.
