Red fan gets his wish Jul 13 2005
By The Evening Chronicle
There was never any doubt Johnny Lawless would be at Anfield when Liverpool began their defence of the Champions League title - but he never expected to be playing.
Lawless has been a Reds fan since birth and used to spend most of his weekends, and plenty of midweeks too, following them up and down the country.
The 23-year-old was in Istanbul when Rafael Benitez's men launched their never-to-be-forgotten fightback against AC Milan and was anticipating being in the stands tonight when Liverpool started their bid for a sixth European Cup.
That was until the first qualifying round draw pitted Lawless' heroes in direct opposition to the Total Network Solutions side he plays for. To say it was a dream tie does not do justice to his emotions.
"I have had a Liverpool kit on virtually since the day I started walking," he said.
"With the exception of my dad's uncle, who was probably dropped on his head when he was born because he is an Evertonian, every single member of my family supports Liverpool.
"For about five years, the only games I missed, home or away, were at places like Southampton in midweek when I couldn't sneak off school.
"To come up against players I have idolised all my life, Scouse lads like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, will be totally unbelievable. It took about a fortnight to sink in.
"When I was about 17, I did think about not going forward with my football because I had the urge to go to games," he admitted.
"But when I started to get a bit older, you realise it is either going to watch Liverpool, which is the best thing you can do, or play football. I think I have made the right choice."

I'm not sure we will see a full strength field starting, but I think he'll keep the big guns on the bench for an 'in case of emergency break glass' scenario!
it hasnt been that long since our last game and our players should be fit enough to beat amatuer players, no matter how many games theyve played
I'm predicting a 6-0 victory at the very least
