Liverpool v. Arsenal Match Thread (Oct. 28, 2007) - AKA The Kiss Wenger's @rse Thread

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby gato_busta » Sat Oct 27, 2007 3:58 pm

I think the formation should be 4-5-1:

                                      Reina
                     Finnan Carragher Hyypia Riise
                                 Masch  Xabi
                                     Gerrard
                         Benayoun        Babel
                                Torres/Crouch

Hope Torres is available, if not I think Crouch could do a good job up front with Babel and Benayoun palying on the wings and even alternating into a 4-3-3 formation while going into attack.

Get your dad to read it, then ask him to explain what the grown ups are talking about.

You haven’t explained anything; all you have done is put down a list to a website which has calculated accurately or inaccurately the amount spent by numerous managers and clubs.

You have not given a clear indication about what it is you are trying to explain, so what are you trying to explain? If you are trying to suggest that Wenger has spent money, then you really didn’t need to go to such depths.

Every fan of the game knows Wenger has spent money, £12m for Wiltord, £8m for Francis Jeffers, £11m for Henry and £17m on Reyes clarifies this.

If you are trying to use the figures to rubbish Wenger’s status as a fine manager, then such an approach is void. Firstly most managers have spent money and secondly, not all managers are able to combine free, flowing, entertaining football with winning football.

Joe O'Cearuill Barnet Free 24-08-2007
Total: £ 3000000

Net: £3,000,000.

So:

Arsene Wenger's net spend whilst at Arsenal is:

£37,176,000, not £21m.

Ergo, if we divide this by the amount of players he has signed (73), it totals £509,260.27 per player. If you divide his gross outlay (£170,350,000) by the same, it comes to £2,333,561.64 per player.

Now if we do the same for Rafa:

So, Rafa's total outlay is £123,750,000 (divided by 34 = £3,639,705.88 - £1,306,144.28 more than Wenger's total. Taking into account inflation and the increased spending in the transfer market, this is a negligible amount.)

When net spending is used, (£86,420,000), the average price paid per player is £2,541,764.71.

So - Wenger's supposed "superior" record is actually not all that, especially when you consider the fact that Rafa has not really begun to sell the players he has bought.

Wenger's record is essentially built on selling his best players. What is to say that, over time, Rafa won't recoup over £100m by selling those players he has signed?

For me, when you consider the fact that more money is spent nowadays, Rafa's record more than matches up to Wenger's, and will, in time, overtake it.

That's the only stat you can possibly use.

That’s not much of a point considering Wenger has been at Arsenal for over a decade and Rafa has been at Liverpool for less than half of a decade.

I'll simplify it, shall I?

If you take the net amount of money Rafa has spent, then divide it by the 4 seasons he's been here, that number is lower than if you divide Wenger's net spending by the 11 or so seasons he's been at Arsenal.

Do you understand now?

But thats not what you said here is it Lando!!!!

LISTEN, I-M-B-E-C-I-L-E - I AM SAYING THAT IF YOU DIVIDE THE AMOUNT OF MONEY WENGER HAS SPENT ON THE 73 SIGNINGS HE HAS MADE, THE NUMBER WILL NOT BE MUCH LESS THAN IF YOU DID THE SAME FOR RAFA. ERGO, HE HAS NOT ACHIEVED WHAT HE HAS ON THE PERCEIVED SHOE-STRING SOME WANKBANDITS BELIEVE.

When I last did it - before this season - it was.

But the thing here is - I've posted it up and actually had the b*llocks to say - "hey - I was wrong". I wonder how many of the cretinous b*stards on here would do the same?

But the main point is still the same - you can't lambast Rafa for spending c. £1.3m more per player than Wenger, if you then consider Wenger to be a genius.

OK? Do we ALL get it now?

They'll depreciate in value if they don't actually play enough games. Those that are regulars, will likewise if they don't up the ante somewhat based on present form.

The likes of Gerrard, Torres, Alonso, Reina perhaps Mascherano (subject to contract) and Agger are our main saleable assets at the moment. Crouch, Kuyt, Riise, Babel maybe Benayoun and Pennant, Kewell if he gets his act together would i imagine fall into the next tier down. One or two makeweights and the odd surprise coming up through the ranks are the rest of what makes up the value to be gained from selling. Like i say, i'd imagine.

So basically you have agreed ALL MY FIGURES added an extra year on which includes players signed before Wenger arrived at Arsenal. Then changed all the rules . Nice one :D

I will use your figures

Wenger net spend 37,176,000/12 = £3million net spend per year

Rafa net spend 86,420,000/4 = £21million net spend per year

Not even close mate.

Yes, you’re correct, but most people already know this so why state the obvious? The fact of the matter is Wenger knows how to win the Premiership and currently Rafa doesn’t even know how to finish second in the league, there’s the difference when it comes to comparing the two manager's.

All managers spend money, but it doesn’t make Wenger any less of a manager, he is still one of the finest managers plying their trade within the English game.

That doesn't mean Wenger is a better manager mate, all it means is he sells his top players, we don't!

The figures are right, but to use Arsenal comparison to stablish the point that Rafa is a money waster is the most convenient case of the top club comparisons to do so.

Lando does have a point when he says that Rafa hasn't lost key elements of the squad, should he had lost Alonso or Gerrard when a big club knocked the door like in Henry's case, or Fabregas next season (Fabregas admitted that Wenger begged him to stay this season), then his balance would have been different.

**But** It cannot be said neither that Rafa has been exactly austere or hasn't made doubtful signings. I don't have a complaint about what he has spent in important players of the squad like Alonso, Reina, Kuyt (I include him as a decent signing) or Agger, as those have been used a lot. My criticism to Rafa is the amount of expensive patches he has used to cover the positions in which he didn't get the required man. People like Josemi have been expensive for what they've done. A lot of money has gone in those uneffective patches.

Anyhow, it cannot be said he's had the spending power of the likes of Mourinho, who in one season almost spent what we spend in 4 years (didn't look the real figures, just in case, trusting  my memory).

Sorry but how the hell was my initial post controversial, I didn't attack anyone, just gave an opinion and then people start taking the :censored: and calling me an idiot, that isn't called for. There are so many posts which I think are complete sh1t but I don't mock people for them!

Chill out mate, I didn't attack your post I was just saying how you could have avoided the criticism.

The problem as I see it is not how much a player costs or how much you get back when he fails and is sold, its the time wasted playing someone who's not good enough and then having to buy another player, who then has to be given time to settle in etc etc.
