Liverpool players and rafa interview

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Ciggy » Wed Jan 18, 2006 8:47 am

Spanish radio station Cadena Ser, done an interview last night from a hotel in town Rafa and co gave these interviews, thanx to GH from RAWK for the translation.

The radio presenters started off by slagging off Liverpool and how ugly and grey it is. Not impressed by Cathedral (Paddy's Wigwam) and says that there is not much traffic because it's Tuesday!

Moro, Xabi, Pepe and Luis are on.
They say that Ochotorena, Ayesteran and Herrera are the ones who know about the city because they work too hard.
Rafa lives on the Wirral in Calderstones and travels through the Mersey tunnel every day.

What changed in Rafa after winning the Champs league?
Rafa:

We are now more demanding of ourselves. Get better every day.

Xabi: likes living here loads because it is like San Sebastian (Rain)

Moro: Very happy with his kids and their schools.

Rafa: The kids after six months in the schools speak fluently in English and put us to shame.
Doesn't understand a word the kids waiting for autographs say but nobody understood what Josemi said neither because he is Andaluz. Compares scouse with Andaluz.

Moro: Public respects you in the street and lets you get on with life.

Xabi: Very positive to me in the streets, encouraging you always even after bad results.

Reina: Players are respected on the pitch and supported much more here than in Spain during the bad times.

All of them:
Driving is difficult! On the otherside of the road.

All of them:
They just said Anfield is mythical. Anyone who likes football must go to Anfield at least once during his/her life.

All of them:
all saying best thing about anfield is when crowd sing YNWA, put the hairs on the back of your neck.

All of them:
changing rooms are suprisingly small.

All of them:
Saying Shankly put the visiting teams hooks really high so everybody would think ¨fu.ck they´re tall¨ (liverpool players)

Now talking about the ground. Cement factory!
Bit by bit you get to know bits of the ground.
Hillsborough monument fills you up a bit cos of the ages of the victims.
Saying that inside the ground is the thing that everyone must see and You'll Never Walk Alone is on a few minutes before the game.
Moro's parents had goose pimples coming to watch him play they have never been to watch him anywhere else. Magic stadium.

Rafa Because the club respects the traditions of football. Changing rooms are old fashioned. Always invite the opponents manager for a drink after just like Shanks did in the boot room.

Pepe Small changing room. Humility is the watchword.

Xabi Hear all the stories and you are constantly reminded of the history of the club.

Rafa Legend has it that the dressing rooms hangers are higher in the away dressing room so that they think that Liverpool players are bigger.

Luis Touching the This is Anfield sign is like touching the Apostle before going on and players from other clubs do it.

Rafa
The Academy is very good and so is Melwood but we needed some bedrooms for siestas. All the facilities are excellent.

Rafa I get up a lot at night cos the youngest one wakes me up.
Gets up at 6
45 mins to Melwood
Rafa talks in Miles Not kilometres. Winding up presenter with this

Rafa's off to bed

Paco

Each of us has a role to get the best from all the players. We are a working group with our own strengths and weaknesses.
Ochotorena and Herrera now being interviewed. Tried to bring more youth into the reserves to convert it into what a reserve team in Spain is. Mostly youngsters.  Pepe is one of the reason we are doing so well.
Theres only two teams on Merseyside thats Liverpool and Liverpool reserves :D

Physical trainers treat the Spanish lads more harshly as they can get away with it.

Xabi
saying english football is harder, more physical, stalled on saying more about the Fat Frank tackle on Xabi, Fernando say first tackle was on his neck and he wasn´t ready for it.
Not so many dives, tricking ref, players get up and get on with it.

Moro Cards are given for bad fouls but nobody acts or anything. Fans don't like players who dive etc... Allardyce looks for corners, long throws, fouls etc...  Interviewer; Surprised at how the fans react to corners as if it were a penalty in Spain.

Reina football in England is more pure, players dive less, referees don't participate so much. He prefers the English methodology.

Are refs better here?
Xabi

I prefer Englsh refs because they permit more and cards are given when everyone in the ground has seen it whereas in Spain they give them for anything. Fewer provocations in Uk although it might be cos I understand Spanish better!
The Press; Doesn't exist. They don't go to watch training or anything. Press is just on Fridays. Fans come to watch at the weekend and the press is the same. There isn´t the tabloid attention, continous press confrences etc like in spain ? not so much daily pressure in things that don´t matter.

English press are more focused on the games. Spanish press are too focused on the day after day, and training sessions.

Pepe
Opinion about Barcelona? Best decision I made was to leave Barcelona. Best football in Europe is played by Barca at the moment. Everyone speaks well of Rijkaard but I don't know him. Good players with a good work ethic.

Luis I don't know and will never know if there was a place forme there but i came here and I'm a European champion and nobody can take that away from me.

Moro Madrid? I'm much calmer here. One season in Madrid is like three elsewhere. Everything magnified. It's healthier for me here.

Morientes A season in Real Madrid is like spending 3 seasons in any other team. Life is more relaxed at Liverpool. At Real there were a lot of not nice surprises sometimes.

Moro talks to Raul often. Moro seems to be hiding something about his condition due to very slow answering and avoiding questions. Likes the idea of Floro helping out at Madrid as he was his football dad at Albacete and Madrid.

Xabi Real Sociedad in a delicate situation. I hope WE get better.

Now about winning the CL.

Xabi
Amazing reception on coming back. 3 to 4 hours of pure happiness. Contagious happiness in the streets. Extremely special here. Because we got to keep the trophy. Alonso talking about how happy he felt during the celebrations after winning the European Cup. People value the fact it has been won 5 times because you can own the trophy then.

Reina
Talking about Dudek. How do you live with the hero of Anfield Pepe? Dudek is a marvellous person. Working atmosphere with Ochotorena is brilliant. Not a comfortable situation for him but he is dealing with it well. Gets on very well with Scott and Jerzy. Understands Jerzy's situation may be uncomfortable.

Great interviews and they all sound really happy which Im very pleased about, interesting what Morientes said about Madrid.

Sabre maybe you can add more when you listen to it.

cool stuff ciggy, i always wonder about foreign (particularly mediterranean) players when they come here cos of the complete change of lifestyle from cafe culture to the cold dark winters of the north of england, but our amigos seem pretty happy here   it sounds like in spain the press are far worse than over here which surprised me, it must get unbearable over there.

so rafa lives over the water? i'll bet my balls all the others are up in formby :nod

Damn. I just listened to the first part of the interview, and went to click on the second link...and it's gone!! Thanks for posting this, though. Interesting listen. Sucks for the non-spanish speakers out there. :p

Excellent stuff, thanks CGGY, interesting to see Xabi enjoys rain like home and they couldnt understand Josemi either due to his dialect.
No wonder he wanted to go back to Spain, couldnt understand the English or even players from his own nation  :D

CGGY I will as soon as I have time. I don't use to listen the SER because I hate them (false rumours, anti north teams, pro madridist bast.ards

In the mean time thank you for bringing that, I can confirm that my city is very rainy (Sunny Spain here is a joke, it's funny to see coming Aussies with shorts and t-shirts, and wondering if they are actually in Spain :D )

As for Scouser-Andaluz. Well When I put radiocity, I have no major problems to understand their accent. Andaluz though is very difficult. They don't pronunciate the "s", thus, being unable to say "Sissoko", they'd say some sort of Thithoughko". That and the fact they speak fast and eating letters (dissapear), makes more difficult to understand them if you want to learn spanish. On the contrary, in the north we exagerate a lot the spelling of words, thus we have a strong accent but it's quite easier to understand us for the Andy G's :D
