Parry reveals status of Liverpool transfer

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry says he remains "hopeful" of landing Real Madrid striker Fernando Morientes but insists that no deal has as yet been agreed.

KopTalk understands that the transfer fee and a first option request on Steven Gerrard are causing problems. Liverpool believe Morientes is overpriced and Real are reluctant to lower the fee unless the Reds cave in to their first option demands on the skipper.

Parry said: "We remain hopeful of bringing the deal to a conclusion. Further talks took place over the weekend but we are still some way off reaching an agreement."

Our source at Real Madrid believes that a deal will eventually be struck. He hints that Liverpool are struggling to finance a deal and that this is the real reason why the deal has been held up.

He said: "Rick Parry has been on the phone every day for two weeks pleading with us to lower the transfer fee. Because the fee is higher than Liverpool expected, they may have to mortgage it."

Asked what the situation with the first option was, the source added: "Perez would love to sign Steven Gerrard but he knows Chelsea could scupper any move in the summer. We can finance a move for Steven Gerrard but anything that helps us compete against our rivals has to be considered."

Reports in the local media suggest that Liverpool will end their interest within a couple of days if a fee can not be agreed.

KopTalk? That's one of the worst sources out there. If we were in a bad financial state we would had given up on Morientes long time ago. One striker is not good enough, we need another[Anelka]

This is all pure brinksmanship, it's about time Parry had the spine to give them a taste of their own medicine. I hope Rafa walks and leaves RM to come back at the end of Jan on our terms, when we have bought Anelka. That way we might get both for a reasonable price.
We sure as hell need them to blitz the remainder of the season.

Real Madrid have reportedly accepted Liverpool's latest £6 million offer for Fernando Morientes, although Lyon claim to have also tabled an official offer.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez had started to grow frustrated with the protracted negotiations to bring Morientes to Anfield.

The arrival of Wanderley Luxemburgo as new Real coach did not help matters, and he originally said that Morientes was not for sale.

However, with Benitez saying that he wanted a final decision from Real within the next few days, it seems as though they have finally decided to allow the Spanish marksman to leave.

Reports from Spain now say that Morientes has initially agreed on a four-and-a-half year contract with Liverpool, although French side Lyon have stepped up their interest by also tabling a firm offer.

"We have tabled an official bid to Real for Morientes," said Lyon managing director Marino Faccioli.

With Real reportedly accepting a bid of around £6 million from Liverpool, Lyon's bid may fall on deaf ears, but they have been sprung into action with the news that Madrid had accepted Liverpool's offer.

The Spanish giants were holding out on Liverpool to get first option on Steven Gerrard should the Reds' skipper ever leave Anfield, but this has not been included in the deal.

Lyon's insistence on bidding for the Spaniard may complicate matters, but Morientes has consistently said that he would like to join Benitez at Anfield, and it seems as though the deal has finally been agreed.

Just read this on sky sports people ................just hope its true !!!! :)

The other day it said that the only way Morientes would join Lyon is if the deal between us and Madrid breakes down.

Mourinho was customizing his flashy blue racing car -- applying the finishing touches of go-faster stripes, aerodynamic spoilers and a fat f@ck you exhaust -- while on his red car, Benitez was trying to glue together a broken chassis, repair bodywork and replace burst tyres.

Liverpool's Morientes Bid Accepted
1/11/2005 10:19:00 PM
Real Madrid have accepted a €10million offer from Liverpool for Fernando Morientes.
The Spanish international is in negotiations with the Premiership club and is set to sign a four-and-a-half-year deal at Anfield and be presented later this week.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez announced that he was becoming impatient after Madrid stalled on a decision whether to sell of keep Morientes.

But new coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo has signalled that he has enough strikers and that gave the board the green light to accept the English club's offer.

Lyon have also tabled a late bid as they want Morientes to replace Giovane Elber, but the offer has come too late as the player who had a successful spell on loan at Monaco last year has already set his heart on a move to Anfield.

Heres another from fox sports.

MADRID, Spain (AP) - Liverpool is close to signing Real Madrid striker Fernando Morientes for €9 million (US$11.8 million), news reports said Tuesday.

EPL
Morientes met with Liverpool on Tuesday and his transfer could be finalized Wednesday when talks resume, news agency Efe said. Liverpool is coached by fellow Spaniard Rafa Benitez.

Madrid is said to have accepted Liverpool's offer, but the English club reportedly rejected the Spanish club's wish to be given first option on midfielder Steven Gerrard.

Morientes joined Madrid in 1997, scoring more than 100 league goals and winning the Champions League three times.

However, Ronaldo's arrival in 2002 limited his first-team chances and he spent last season on loan with Monaco. He helped the French team to the Champions League final and was chosen as the best player in last season's competition.

Morientes rejoined Madrid last summer after receiving assurances from coach Jose Antonio Camacho that he would play in the first team. However, Morientes was sidelined in favor of Ronaldo, Raul Gonzalez and Michael Owen after Camacho's sudden resignation.

On Tuesday, David Beckham said he wanted Morientes to stay with Madrid.

"I think Morientes is a star player and he is very important for the fans," Beckham said. "He was at Monaco last year and now he is back here. I think he should stay here, but that's not up to me or the players. He's a good person and an excellent player."

If Morientes' transfer is completed, he would become the fifth Spanish player at the Premier League club. The others are Luis Garcia, Xabi Alonso, Antonio Nunez and Josemi Gonzalez. Argentine central defender Mauricio Pellegrino, who spent more than six seasons in Spain, also joined Liverpool from Valencia last week.

He obiviously can't say he's happy with Morientes leaving now can he? Sometimes you need to ignore these things. Nobody is going to stop Gerrard from going so if Gerrard wants to go he can go but Madrid better be able to put their money where their mouth is as Chelsea offered 40 million and Stevie G turned it down, they will have to offer more than that
