Top English clubs can face European Champions League ban for unpaid debt

Top English clubs like Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal could be banned from the European Champions League unless they clear off their massive debts.

London, June 27 : Top English clubs like Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal could be banned from the European Champions League unless they clear off their massive debts.

UEFA president Michel Platini wants all sides in debt to be prevented from entering Europe's top competition.

Platini is fed up that big clubs who are already millions in debt continue to splash out huge transfer fees signing new players, the Daily Styar reported.

The two-time World Player of the Year claimed that UEFA will come down hard on clubs that owed hefty sums -- a move that could have seen winners United and runners-up Chelsea banned from last season's Champions League.

He said: "UEFA is going to fight to regulate access to its competitions for clubs who are in debt. I am not just talking about United and Chelsea, who got to last season's Champions League final with a big debt, I am speaking in general."

"We are also going to control the money received from TV rights and publicity through competing in European competitions," he added. UEFA is going to fight to regulate access to its competitions for clubs who are in debt. Platini was answering questions about Real Madrid's big money interest in Cristiano Ronaldo.

United has debts of 650million pounds, plus 42million pounds in interest payments every year as part of the Glazer takeover deal.

Liverpool's buy-out by Americans George Gillett and Tom Hicks resulted in a 350million pounds refinancing package.

Roman Abramovich's big spending at Chelsea has been in the shape of loans to the club totalling 600million pounds.

And Arsenal is reported to have big loans after spending 360million pounds on their new Emirates Stadium.

Platini has a vendetta against successful English clubs. It must make his skin crawl to see Ehglish football doing so well.

Rib it.

:D

I'm looking forward to watching England's only two fiscally responsible top-flight teams in the revamped CL: West Ham and Stoke City! :buttrock

This proposal will never, ever in a million years gain traction so it's only purpose is to serve as another timely reminder that Michel Platini, for all of his talent on the pitch back in the day, is a bit of twunt. :D

I stand corrected.

A while back I said that us continentals wouldn't want an european competition without english clubs. I said that people like me, admire the english football rather than envy.

*But*

After reading this, I have to say that what I said it must be just me, because what I'm reading is incredible: Spanish clubs had massive debt and never heard such a thing.

Incredible. Shocked.

I wonder if Platini is going to carry this through to it's logical conclusion and prevent supporters who are in debt from splashing out on expensive tickets for CL matches.  If you're carrying a mortgage, a car loan, a substantial credit card debt etc. shouldn't you be looking to pay that down instead of attending high-profile football matches? ??? :D

Pratini isn't playing god, he's playing knob. What a prize c v n t, besides weakening the competition by ejecting the sides that made three of the last four and boast five finalists in four seasons. He's just bitter because the English clubs dominated so much, doing what a lot of people that resent that would love.

I thought it was basically the Italian clubs that were bust? - as opposed to being in serviceable debt. No english club has said that it cannot service its debt?

The president of UEFA is a standing job, he doesnt have regular reelection is that right? We´re stuck with this head-the-ball for how long?
