Liverpool FC staff get insults guide to curb fans' abuse

Liverpool Football Club staff have been issued with a guide to unacceptable language so they can help eradicate verbal abuse from fans.

The handbook highlights "offensive" phrases including "don't be a woman", "play like a girl" and "that's gay".

The club said they wanted to stamp out slurs against race, religion, sexual orientation, gender and disability.

Player Luis Suarez was found to have racially abused Manchester United's Patrice Evra during a game last year.

The club were criticised in February by black community groups for a perceived lack of action.

Liverpool's players receive their own guidance as part of a separate Premier League programme.

Social inclusion officer Rishi Jain said the club had been "actively engaged in an education and awareness programme".

"This programme includes interactive workshops and a handbook which is designed to provide information on the latest equality legislation including what terminology is deemed acceptable and unacceptable."

He added it would help staff "take the necessary steps to ensure Anfield is free from all forms of discrimination".

Lord Herman Ouseley, chair of anti-discrimination group Kick It Out, said the guide was a positive step.

He said Liverpool FC had taken "great strides" to tackle discrimination.

"Match day stewards must be trained on dealing with incidents of discrimination and unacceptable behaviour in order to eradicate it from our stadiums."

those 3 examples they gave are lame
while im not saying its ok to abuse people but some of the funniest stuff ive ever heard was whilst in a stand or terrace at a match. its just banter and adds to the atmosphere as long as its kept to a reasonable level.
the thought's of being ejected for saying "don't be a woman" is a step too far.

How do they know that shouting "play like a girl" is a derogtory term.

I find that assumption fairly patronising and sexist   :D

I know this thread is pretty lighthearted, but really.  Girls over here actually use "Play like a girl" as a battle cry.  My son and I went to watch my daughter's game last week (after his game that I'm the coach).  Holy Shlt.  These girls are tough as nails and have so much more aggression than the boys do.  (Maybe why the US Women's team is the best in the world and the Men are in the teens ).

I think it's actually an insult to the way girls play to think it's an insult (if that makes sense).

This is not a guide for players (they are under FA guidelines) or even to a certain extent back of house staff.

It's a guide for front of house staff, public facing staff.
