What about Sammi Hyppia in the running? Not nessecarily the best but surely worth a mention? 2001 treble winning captain and all.

Whilst Stevie G is a great player and can be POTENTIALLY an all time great captain, he's won nothing yet.

come on guys lets not forget players because they are not fashionable.

I've voted for Stevie because the others are all captains of successful teams, Stevie was the reason we finished 4th last season becaus ehe pulled the team through with his passion.

I just hope he can be a captain of a succesful Liverpool team like the others

Souness had an aura about him, he'd break guys legs if he had to. Dalglish said they often fought after a game if they played badly. I think that is good in a squad, not all that togetherness ****** GH always went on about after every loss (there were a lot).

Souness was a winner, Stevie had a good season but has never won a worthwhile medal.

My Grandad told me Ron Yeats was Liverpools greatest captain. But for me there was nobody to touch Graeme Souness.Stevie will have to win a couple of European cups and a handful of premier titles to come anywhere near the Scot.

In all fairness, great player that he is, Steven Gerrard is only captain here 8 months and has led us to nothing yet.

Jeez, sometimes I get the feeling that some supporters' memories go only back as far as 1997.....

Sorry if i bother your excitement, it's an interesting thread, but I personally think most of people here are not capable enough (maybe a few of you above 50 are, but not for Billly Liddle or maybe Ronnie Moran) of being witnesses to even generally observe every captain from every age of corresponded Liverpool history (also in agreement with JBG).

I mean, i can subjectively rate Hansen, Emlyn, even Ron Yeats as players but I admit i know "nothing" to dare myself measuring their captaincy ability unless i locked myself up in the Liverpool library for some literature studies. I don't even have any idea about parameters of a desirable captain. (can anybody tell me? maybe stu the coach?)

But for "happy answer", of course i'd go for stevie.

Ah sh.it, it has to be Ronnie Whelan.

No ,seriously,Graeme Souness was the greatest ever team player(captain)in Liverpool history. He was as important as Gullit,Maradona,Platini,Keane or Robson.
