Mind games keep Liverpool striker Kuyt fit
22.06.09 | Ian Ferris

Dirk Kuyt has admitted to using a touch therapist before every game to ensure he is at peak performance.

The Liverpool hitman has a faith healer, Henk de Gier, from Holland fly to England, and has a session with the 28-year-old before every match.

Kuyt told the Sunday Mirror, "Before every home game I have a natural healer called Henk de Gier fly in from Holland. He does a session with me and makes sure I go on the pitch in top condition.

"And Henk is not the only one who helps me. For quite a few years I have been using a haptonomist (a touch therapist). I like to invest in my fitness and well being.

"I played more than 60 matches last season.

"The reason I was able to do that is because I let these healers fly in.

"It started after I had a bad spell at Liverpool in 2008. I even lost my place in the Dutch national team.

"Ever since Henk has treated me, I have been running like a steam train.

"Henk has a special treatment for me. He calls it 'the shaker'. He gets rid of all my physical problems and he loosens my body.

"He takes away not only injuries, but also stress and headache. He has helped me enormously."

If only they could find a therapist who could give Kuyt a great touch.

Total boll0cks or maybe there is something in it ?

It depends what the "therapy" is designed to do. If it's designed to ensure that Dirk can tear about like a lunatic for 90 minutes, then I think we all need this guys number. If it's designed to improve Dirk's first touch, then the fella should be wearing a stripy top and a mask. That "shaker" thing sounds interesting though. A couple of times when Dirk was playing up front and missed glorious opportunities (no doubt in the period which he spoke of in the interview) I could have given him the "shaker" treatment myself. Whether it would have worked for him or not I'm not sure, but it would have made me feel better that's for sure.

On a slight side note, it's odd that when a players form obviously dips half of the fans on the forum can see it, along with the whole of the rest of the football World. The other half of the forum can't see it, but they can see lots of "unseen" stuff. Presumeably, the players themselves are not privvie to all the "unseen" stuff as they usually accept themselves as Kuyt has done here that they are going through a "dodgy" spell.

I don't care if he uses a witchdoctor or consults Mystic Meg , if it works

Come on Mick you can't seriously be suggesting that people are so loyal to Kuyt that they will not even accept it when he has a poor run of form? Wind your neck in.

Anyway back to topic. I believe that it is all psychological. Maybe he had a lift in form after his first few session that imo were not linked to this which doctor :) Kuyt believed he had stumbled across something great and he has felt unbeatable since and has there played at a higher level in a greater percentage of games.

exactly.

i'm sure the religious fellas (kaka) get a boost from their own beliefs - same for kuyt and his particular mumbo jumbo

I'm sure stevie has a little shrine to himself at home , where he burns a few candles to an icon of himself Image

Me. I don't like "healers" coming in to do "the shakers". I hope the club controls those "healers".

Quite simply I expect the club physios are well aware of the methods that anyone apply on our players. The player's positive opinion is not good enough for me, it has to have the blessings of the club physios -- not that the article says they're not aware, but just in case.

Alternative treatments can work but I agree they should be controlled, don't want any of our players going all doolally.

its a confidence thing - it gives him the confidence to not dwell on a poor touch or a bad miss like he may have done previously. In Babels case he may have to sacrifice a few animals, possibly even a child. Dossena should just be thrown into a volcano, or sold to Juve, i can go either way
