Benitez can blast past Fergie and Wenger

Dec 7 2006

By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

Rafael Benitez

RAFA BENITEZ can eclipse Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger and even the great Bob Paisley if he claims his 50th Reds league win on Saturday.

Benitez has won 49 of 92 Premiership games since taking charge at Anfield.

It took Wenger 94 matches to reach the half century at Arsenal, and Ferguson needed 116 league games to get to 50 after joining United in 1986.

At Anfield, only Bill Shankly, who reached 50 wins in 90 games, and Kenny Dalglish, whose double winners needed just 85 between 1986-88, have achievedthe feat in 90 matches or less since 1959.

That's very interesting.

We talk about players "settling in" to the Premier League but I guess managers need time to settle in too.

Comparing Rafa to Wenger and Ferguson, and Shanks. Very nice. But Moreen would have a better record than just about anyone, 50 wins in probably 60 games (<- just a guess.)

I'm sure someone can find the right figure but that's about right seeing as he won 29 in both of his first seasons

Very intersting that. Its a stat that is very obvious, but no one really cared to think about!

I never thought about it myself and tbh im a bit surprised.
We all know that patience is required when a new manger comes and LFC fans are respected worldwide for being very patient and supportive of managers throughout history.

It kinda puts it all in perspective, theres also the little added bonus of a C/L title and F.A cup, also our greatest tally of points since the EPL began.
In fairness to Benitez, winning the C/L may have raised expectations even on the domestic scene for a lot of fans!

Its a nice positive stat to point out Joko..one that made me smile!
We are heading in the right way with Raffa...league success is well and truely in the post!

Josie Moronho won 29 games in his first season and 29 in his second season so it's a fair bet he beat Rafa since that is 58 out of 76 games. Chelsea lost 1 and drew 1 of their last 10 games last season so I make it he did it in 66 games - pretty cr ap for someone who has spent over £200m in two and a bit years.

Still I think the comparison with fergie and whinger stands up fair, although the mancs were only a second rate side back in the 80s
Never buy from PC World, product quality is poor and their 'customer service' is even poorer

If we are to be honest Ferguson has proven himself to be an all time great, Wenger is the best I've ever seen at finding and developing players and his team played the best football I've seen while Mourinho record while in England is unbelievable.

Hopefully in a few years Rafa will be up there with those three in relation to achievements in England but until the league is won then still something to prove.
